subject: Feel Loneliness? Solutions That May Provide Relief [print this page]

The feeling of loneliness can be an intense and unbearable one, and severe cases can quickly cause the sufferer to spiral into full-blown depression. This isn't always the case however, and far more common are temporary episodes of loneliness that can be rectified with a few simple solutions. In this article, we take a look at some of the common causes and circumstances of loneliness and how you can get some relief.

One of the most common causes of loneliness is boredom. This in itself can be caused by a wide and varied array of reasons, with most of them being fairly trivial. Thankfully, the feeling of loneliness that stems from boredom is usually quashed easily enough simply by making an effort to become more socially active. You can for instance join in on clubs or organizations centered on your interests, such as a karate class, ballroom dancing lessons, or a horticulture club. You could even sign up for a gym or form a band if you are so inclined. By taking a concrete step to becoming more active in your area of interest, you may be able to deal with some of the less significant reasons for feeling loneliness.

Some people may feel loneliness because of a sudden move from a familiar place or the departure of a close friend or family member. These episodes of loneliness are often a bit more challenging to deal with, since you will rarely have any control over the situation. Nevertheless, there are still ways around your problem, and you don't have to lie down and give in to your feeling of loneliness no matter how hopeless things may seem.

One of the most effective quick fixes for loneliness is simply reconnecting with old friends or close family members. If you find useful far from home and the loneliness is made much more difficult to bear due to distance, you can use the telephone or Internet chat to bridge the gap. Things can seem pretty hopeless when you are all alone in a strange and unfamiliar new place, but you would be surprised at how much better you will feel after even just a few minutes chat with your best friend or mother.

If you have tried all these methods and haven't gotten any relief, you might be missing a key part of the equation. When people suffer from loneliness, depression often follows closely at its heels. Just like depression, loneliness can actually be dispelled quickly and effectively by taking care of yourself. Make an effort to keep yourself looking as presentable as possible and resist the urge to "let yourself go". Positive and negative energy feed on itself, and you will only get as much relief from loneliness as the work you put in to relieving it. Take care of your personal hygiene, keep yourself fit with exercise and a proper diet, and you will only become stronger and better able to meet the challenges ahead after your loneliness has passed.
