subject: Loneliness Quotes-the Other Perspective [print this page]

Who of us hasn't felt loneliness at some point or another? Unless you have a heart made out of solid rock, you have likely felt the twinge of loneliness several times in your lives. The universality of loneliness has of course given rise to numerous bits of advice and information on how to deal with this very issue, and loneliness quotes are only some of them. Some of the most popular sections in quotations sites are those that dispense loneliness quotes-and for good reason. Many such quotes have a way of resonating in the lonely individual, giving them the strength to overcome adversarial conditions or to seek a way out. In some cases, loneliness quotes may even help bring about a clearer perspective on the issue, and somehow make loneliness seem just a bit more bearable. In fact, some such quotes even seem to celebrate loneliness, as you will see in a few examples below.

From Margaret Cho:

"People drain me, even the closest of friends, and I find loneliness to be the best state in the union to live in."

In this quote, Margaret clearly has a more accepting view of loneliness than most people, using it as something of a refuge from others. Although there is a tendency to discourage such an antisocial way of thinking, there are instances wherein even the most well intentioned people become a bit stifling to the point of tedium. In such instances, loneliness may actually be a favorable alternative to company.

Dag Hammarskjold has this to say about loneliness:

"Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for."

This is one of the few quotes on loneliness that not only seems to suggest its merit, but actually ascribes in the emotion the potential to bring forth something of value. Even in the worst of circumstances, no matter how lonely you may feel, making the best out of your loneliness and using it as a means for a better end is certainly worth considering.

Even more profound is this quote from Sunita Khosla:

"To transform the emptiness of loneliness, to the fullness of aloneness. Ah, that is the secret of life."

In this quote, the author goes beyond the use of loneliness as a tool for accomplishment, and actually suggests that mastery of it holds the key to life. By overcoming all the negative feelings and tendencies associated with loneliness, we may be able to find fulfillment and satisfaction-"fullness", as the author wrote-in solitude. It was said in a song that "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world". With Khosla's statement taken to heart, it may just be that people who find satisfaction in their own skin may be no less lucky. By casting off the reliance on external forms of loneliness remedy, you just may be able to solve the elusive problem of loneliness that plagues so many of even the luckiest people in the world.
