subject: Legal Assistance For Single Mothers In The United States [print this page]

Those single mothers that are in need of legal assistance, but may not be able to afford it, should not have to go without. This can really put these mothers at a disadvantage and it can really affect just about every aspect of their lives. This means that they must be able to find some type of legal assistance that they can afford or that they will be able to make payments on.

One such organization might be Northwestern legal services. This company will work very hard to serve low income families in northwesternPennsylvaniathat are dealing with legal problems. If you do not live in this area then you may want to at least call them and find out if they can direct you to a similar service that is near you. Many local courthouses will have this information as well because they will be dealing with these attorneys all of the time.

Those families that are interested in trying to get services through this company will want to make sure that they are meeting the poverty guidelines. This is the most common way to determine if someone is eligible for a service or not. In most cases the mother will need to be at 125% of the poverty level if they would like to receive legal services like this.

Many of the local organizations like this one will be willing and capable of helping single mothers with a wide range of problems and complications. These might include housing complications, child support, education and even complications that they might have with public benefits.

Finally, if you need to go before a judge or you are dealing with court issues and you do not have the money to pay for an attorney then you might be eligible to have an attorney assigned to you. This is your right. However, you might not end up with the attorney that you wanted or you may not be able to actually make a selection but the courts will be able to provide you with an attorney if you are able to meet the income guidelines that they require. One last thing to keep in mind is that you may be required to pay a filing fee for this and you will be required to fill out paperwork and meet financial guidelines. Many times this is established by the state and not the local court system so you may not be able to get around paying it.

If you have looked for a few state organizations or agencies that will help you with your legal problems and you are not able to find anyone that can help you with legal assistance then you may want to start making phone calls to local attorneys in your area. Believe it or not, there are some of them that will give you legal assistance for no cost. Or, they may be willing to work out a sliding fee scale for you. This means that they will work with you on a payment that you can afford. Sometimes you can even make payments.

Depending on the type of legal assistance that you need, you might find some attorneys that will help you out and they will not accept a payment unless they actually win your case for you. While this may sound like a great way to get some wonderful service you should still speak with the attorney about the fees that they will be charging you if they do win. You do not want to think that you are getting a great deal to find out that you will end up paying the attorney everything that you did win. It only makes sense that you will work all of this out and have an estimated fees for service plan in place before you decide to work with the attorney. This only makes good sense and it can protect you. If you find that the attorney does not want to give you an estimate then you will want to find another attorney. Finding one that will be honest with you from the very beginning will be best and it will help to ensure that they will not take advantage of you.
