subject: Running Tips - Reasons To Run With A Group [print this page] Running is a great sport - whether you do it by yourself or with others. Now, I'll admit, I like to run by myself now. But, there was a time when I ran with others 3-4 times a week. There are several reasons for running with a group. Read on to find out more.
A great reason to run with others is for the motivation. When you run with others, you cheer each other on - and they can help you through the rough spots during a run. You may be feeling a little tired during a long run - having someone else there can help you get through it.
Also, regarding motivation, if you know that others are counting on you being there, you are less likely to miss a run. You don't want to disappoint them - and in turn, you get out the door for your scheduled run.
Running with others also is safer than alone. If something happens, there is someone else there that can help. Things can happen - a fall, getting sick - having someone there can really make a difference. Also, if there is a potential attacker around (and don't worry, you're usually safe), they are less likely to bother a group of runners. In all the years I've been running - nothing has ever happened. But, I do know that it is less likely to when there is a group running together.
When you run with a group, there's a great sense of camaraderie. You get to know each other very well. You form friendships that will last through many years. The friends that I made that were my running buddies are still special friends - even though we may not train together anymore. Also, you find yourself cheering each other on at road races - and this can be a great boost when you need it.
Running with others can actually help you to become a faster runner. You find that you may have a little friendly rivalry going on during some of your runs. Many times you will push each other to faster times.
If you think that you would like to run with others, but not sure where to find someone - there are some things that you can do. Check to see if there is a local running club. You will find runners of all levels of ability, and I'm sure that you could find someone to run with. Also, check with your local running store. Many times they will have group training runs.
