subject: Factors To Consider Before Having Skin Tags Removed [print this page]

There are a number of things that must first be weighed before you take that final step to having your skin tags removed. The tags in question here are usually small growths that occur on the skin (especially in the locations where the skin forms crease-like structures). However, since skin tags are benign and they do not normally cause pain for the person who has them, they are not treated with the urgency that other medical emergencies receive. The question as to the removal of the skin tags would have to be made by the person who has them. Another valid reason for the skin tags to be removed would be if they actually cause irritation to the skin. Ultimately, the fate of the skin tags would be in the hands of the patient, who will also take some cosmetic considerations into account.

The first consideration you need to make, before going to have skin tags removed is the one on whether the tags are really affecting your looks in any significant way. Remember, skin tags are actually very small. Many people don't even notice them. Few of us realize that most of the people we meet don't actually look very closely at us. For a person to notice these types of tags, he or she has to be paying extremely close attention (and not very many people do so). If the tag, however, is quite big and it appears in a very obvious part of the body, then it sure is noticeable. But that does not automatically mean that people would immediately think you look less attractive if you have these skin tags. In the final analysis though, if the tags are causing you distress, and if you feel that they are affecting your appearance in a significant way, you have justification to go and have them removed.

The next consideration you have to make would be the cost of skin tag removal. Will the cost be worth it? Cash outlay on your part is a given, despite the fact that you have medical insurance coverage. That is on account of the fact that the procedure is likely to be classified as a 'cosmetic' procedure. But, considering all the distress and pains that these skin tags are causing, you might deem the money you will spend to be well worth it if it means you will be skin tag-free in the end.

The third consideration you need to make, before going to have skin tag removal performed is the one as to whether you can bear the pain of the procedure in pursuit of the marginal cosmetic benefit. You might be able to use anesthesia in the treatments, though. But there will be some pain to be borne once the numbing effect of the anesthesia wears off. You could, however, decide to still go ahead and have the skin tags removed if you think the presence of the skin tags is more psychologically tormenting than the actual physical pain you will have to endure during the procedure.
