Are you aware that each worksite must have Site Safety Rules in position? Yes they must be set to safeguard the health and safety of both personnel and visitors on your worksite. A handful of these regulations need to be supplied for the duration of site induction. In addition, this principle must be shown on news boards and prominent destinations on the worksite.
The Site Safety Rules must be integrated in your Site Safety Management Plan or otherwise known as the Work Health and Safety Management Plan and it should be quick and easy to adhere to for everybody.
If you wish to get more information regarding what protocols you need and the ways to communicate them on your worksite, weve published a short article on this very area and weve furnished a link below this video for you to read.
Additionally it is worthwhile to learn that the Site Safety Management Plan template currently has this core site safety rules written and all you need to do is edit them by either getting rid of them, changing the text or adding new rules.
Now I wish to speak about OHS Harmonisation Laws. The new harmonised OHS laws also called Work Health and Safety Act or WHS Act came to force on the 1st January 2012 in New South Wales, ACT, Queensland, Northern Territory and the Commonwealth. On the other hand, in other states and areas theyve either yet to be approved or yet to be introduced into parliament. The one state thats genuinely resisting implementing these new legislation is the state of Victoria. Now they've stated that they conducted a research towards the expense and benefits of implementing these new laws and regulations and they've come to final result that it could cost around $4.5 billion for Victorian firms to adopt the newest legislation and that there would be very little or if not any advantage to Victorian firms.
As a result it is not regarded if Victoria can ever consent to this latest laws and regulations and we are convinced that its only a matter of time before they do consent to because most are actively adopting these laws and regulations and the authorities is pushing these days to adopt the new OHS laws.
In terms of South Australia, they've made a decision to adjourned debates on the new bill while in Western Australia they still havent introduced the bill into parliament. In Tasmania they've approved the bill but it wont come into force before the 1st of January 2013, next year.
Either way weve made certain that all our plans and manuals abide by the old and new guidelines in all States and Territories.
So if you've got any questions about complying either with the old guidelines or the new law please contact us or send us an email.
If you need to keep up-to-date with how states and territories are adopting the new legal guidelines then weve supplied the url to a government page below this video.
Last of all, I'd like to speak about eye protection. Now, a recent statement carried out by the Center for Eye Research in Australia learned that 45% of victims weren't wearing safety glasses during the time of their injuries. Now apart from that large number, a big chunk of those traumas occurred in the construction industry. And the primary reason why this is the case is because construction workers usually use metal quite a lot.
So the LESSON here is that Work Safety Legislation is capable of a great deal in order to avoid eye injuries.
Its up to us to perform the essential things such as employing safety glasses to stop this kind of injuries from happening.
If you wish to discover more about this statement, weve furnished a web link to this report below this video.
That's it for an additional week. I'll be back in a few days with an additional news update.
