subject: How Alcohol Addiction Affects An Athletes Performance [print this page]

There are several surveys that show several sports athletes that develop an alcohol dependency early on in their career. This is due to their constant exposure to the limelight leading them to consume liquor uncontrollably. They might start out having a drink or two while in an event but would end up consuming great quantities of liquor after attending several more gatherings over a few days. Their overall performance are not the only ones that get affected by their dependency, their mental state also will get affected leading them to develop psychological disorders.

There are several alcohol rehab centers that handle treatment for an athlete's alcoholism problem. These rehabilitation centers specialize in quietly treating such professional athletes in order to avoid exposing their addiction to the public. It is best for an athlete to get the treatment they need on their own rather than letting their handlers or administrators find out about their addiction. They would either get suspended or terminated if they don't deal with their dependency themselves.

One side effect of alcohol addiction an athlete must be careful of is the depletion of their motor skills or capabilities. This will greatly affect how they perform within a game causing them or their team to lose points or score a lot less during a game. Many alcohol rehabilitation which deal with an athlete's alcohol dependency focus on treating the negative effects of alcoholism for their patients to avoid having mental disorders. The efficient way of getting treatment for their alcohol dependency is to become an inpatient at a treatment facility. This way they're able to receive the full extent of the treatment program so they can be treated properly for their alcoholism.

An athlete's reflexes and reaction would gradually slow down when they are under the influence of alcohol while actively playing. These are some of the indications that a player is intoxicated while playing the game. Another is that they smell like alcohol or rotten fruit which is actually a primary indication of someone who consumed alcohol. Yet another indication of alcohol intoxication is staggering, they are not able to walk right and cannot seem to balance themselves right when walking or running. Finally one obvious sign is dehydration; an athlete who looks dehydrated would have dry lips, dried-out skin and would continuously hydrate themselves throughout the day. Additionally an athlete would quickly be fatigued after only a couple of minutes in the game.
