subject: Stair Lifts As Public Amenities [print this page] Stair lifts? Ah, yes, theyre absolutely fantastic! I know personally what they can do. Ive been working in my local library for about eight years this September. Time really flies when youre having fun, as they say. And I really do love working here. First of all, I love books and reading and so its always a great challenge when our visitors ask me for some advice on what they should read next. And beyond that, I love being part of the community and meeting all the characters who live around here. And believe me, there are some real cards. Like Gavin, who is working his way through all the books in the library in alphabetical order (hes still on A, bless him), or Sarah, who only reads biographies. My favourite however would probably have to be dear old Harold.
Harold is a very tall, happy old man. Hes very polite and very funny. At the library entrance, there are some stairs, and Harold always had to take his time when he was climbing them, because his legs were quite stiff, which made it difficult to get up them. But when he did come up, hed pause at my desk to have a chat and a catch up. I wont be able to climb up those stairs for much longer! he would say. Youll have to pull me up with a rope! He always was a joker, but I knew he was right. And before I knew it, Harold stopped coming to the library. We were able to send him books by delivery, but I knew it wasnt the same. And besides, I missed my chats with Harold, and I was sure he missed coming into the library. And thats when a friend told me all about stair lifts.
Naturally the thought had come to me before, but the library doesnt get an awful lot of funding and I had just assumed that there wasnt enough room in the budget for a big piece of equipment like that. But my friend went online and found some deals which blew my mind. There were top quality stair lifts for a far more reasonable price than I had expected. And so, as soon as possible, we got one installed. And once again Harold was back in the library. And even though he doesnt need to catch his breath anymore, he still stops for a chat!
