subject: When Your Drugs Turn You Down [print this page]

When you hear about the word "addiction", it is always easy to assume that this involves illegal drugs and alcohol. We usually have a preconceived idea that these people only use substances for them to actually suffer addiction. However, this phenomenon encompasses a great issue of events and instances which may happen to a person. There are several kinds of addiction that extend from physical dependence up to psychological tolerance. Here are some examples just to name a few.

Drug tolerance can be brought about with the use of certain drugs. The body gets used to its presence and in the long run, the person perceives that he can no longer make it through without it. Multiplied doses will be needed already in order to get the desired effect. This may happen particularly if one has been prescribed with the strong drug over a long period of time. When the dosage of the drug is high, it is also more likely that the patients will build tolerance to the drug. Pain relievers, anxiolytics and depressants are just some of the usually abused prescription medications that may cause tolerance.

On the other hand, psychological addiction happens when the particular person experiences extreme desires to do or use a particular thing. Some instances when a person has this kind of addiction include pathological gambling, drugs and alcohol, food addictions or even playing video games. People who are having these compulsions may be emotionally isolated to family and friends, negligent to their duties and have frequent emotional outbursts or mood swings. Usually, the ones he is going out with are those people who have a similar vice as him. These people go out of their way to secure drugs like when they steal or tell lies just to satisfy their desires. Some people who have been cured may go back to this unhealthy behavior if the relapse prevention plan is not followed. This is why substance abuse prevention programs must include a fall back plan.

Lastly, physical addiction is a condition when the body becomes extremely dependent on substances that when these are eliminated from the body, withdrawal symptoms are suffered. Depending on the kind of addiction that the person has, these warning signs can range from mild to severe in nature. Sometimes, it can get to a point where it will be fatal to the person. In the case of addiction, the person no longer has control to take the drugs because of the ill effects that he will feel when not using it. Addiction is something that is hard to get rid off once it has gotten into our body. But on the other hand, it is not impossible to stop this peculiar and destructive behavior with the aid of different substance abuse programs.
