subject: Huge Mistaken Beliefs About Exercise [print this page]

There are a few mistaken beliefs about fitness that I will go over in this article. Many of them have been around for ages and won"t seem to go away. I will try to explain why none of them are true so hopefully you will not make the mistake of continuing the legacy of these beliefs. The first mistaken fitness belief I will discuss is the idea of spot reduction. This is the concept that you can intentionally target a specific area or region of your body and try to reduce body fat in that area alone. This really can"t be done because this isn"t how weight loss works as I will explain. The second misconception I will discuss is the idea that all sugar is the same and that the sugar in even fruit or vegetables is the same as the sugar in cupcakes and other such junk foods. This isn"t true at all and I will explain why in this article. The third mistaken belief I will address is that performing a resistance training exercise for a high number of repetitions burns fat and "tones" the muscle or region of the body being worked. This really isn"t true and I will explain why. In addition to addressing these mistaken beliefs I will discuss the idea of getting an online fitness instructor which offers a great way of getting good exercise directions. Getting an online fitness instructor is the top way of getting in shape in this day and age because an online fitness instructor combines all of the good qualities of different weight loss methods into one good and effective method to lose weight and get in shape.

The idea of spot reduction is a big mistaken belief. As I stated already, you can"t reduce fat intentionally in one specific area of your body. Fat reduction occurs relatively evenly throughout your body and you can"t dictate where you want it to happen. Some people do lose and gain weight more in curtain areas but these people have relatively little control over how this process happens. The only natural thing that causes a reduction in body fat is the expenditure of energy. As your body requires energy it burns calories and some of these calories can come from fat. Your liver is the organ that actually burns the fat while the thyroid gland regulates the amount of fat going to be burned. These organs do not target curtain areas of your body aside from the areas they are genetically predisposed to target.

The next mistaken belief to be addressed is the belief that all sugar is that same. I personally find it incredible to know that even many health professional think this is the case. I have heard many authoritative sources in the fitness world discourage the consumption of fruit because of its sugar content. Let me explain why this is a huge mistaken belief. The sugar in fruit is called fructose. Fructose has a glycemic index of about 20. This number fits on a scale of 1 to 100 in terms of how quickly it can raise our blood sugar levels. Sucrose which is the sugar found in sweets has a glycemic index of about 70. So as you can gather, sucrose poses a much greater risk of causing you to gain fat mass.

The last misconception to address is the idea that if you perform a high number of repetitions for an exercise you will tone that muscle group. I hear people say this all of the time and I assume by "tone" they mean to become leaner. As I explained already, spot reduction isn"t really possible and you can"t target a curtain body part when trying to reduce fat mass. I think people feel that if they perform high repetitions that the burning sensation they feel is fat around that muscle group being burned which it isn"t. That is just lactic acid coming into contact with your nerves which causes that feeling.

The last thing I wanted to discuss getting an online fitness instructor because I feel it is the most reliable way of getting in shape through exercise instruction. An online fitness instructor is essentially a personal trainer who instructs you over the internet. An online fitness instructor also has a personal training certification.
