subject: Devastating Effects Of Drug And Alcohol Addiction [print this page]

Substance abuse is the unmanageable craving for any substance that could harm the body of the one using it. It affects anyone regardless of age, religion, race or social status.

Medical help should be sought when the individual cannot stop using drugs on his own will. Regardless of the type of abuse, drug rehabilitation programs are available to help them heal and get back to his normal life.

Alcohol abuse

A recent survey of the Center for Disease Control reports that about twenty percent of alcoholics have had five or more alcoholic drinks on one day. Some individuals drink alcoholic beverages daily while others only drinks once in a while but in large volume. Whatever the case may be either could result in alcohol addiction. Binge drinking is a unique case of abusing alcohol but it can cause poor judgment and alcohol poisoning.

Drug Abuse

Any kind of drug whether purchased illegally or recommended by a healthcare provider when used for pleasure is regarded as drug abuse. Prescribed medications commonly abused are steroids, analgesics, narcotics, barbiturates and tranquilizers. These drugs although helpful could give harmful effects when used beyond the doctor's order. Illegal medicines often abused are crack, cocaine and also heroin.

Side Effects to the person

The person taking the drugs is the one who will greatly suffer the effects of the drug abuse. It will make him physically and psychologically ill. He will experience painful withdrawal symptoms, changes in character and affects his state of mind. His personal life, working relationships, and financial life is also affected.

Effects to the body

Drug addiction causes damaging effects on our body systems. It includes damage to the heart, liver, lungs and other major organs of the body. Withdrawal symptoms to some medications could also be dangerous. When alcohol consumption is prolonged it can cause serious and irreversible harm to the liver. Financial issues often arise due to addiction and this could be the reason they will have difficulty to fund a successful recovery.

Seeking help

The person struggling with addiction must seek help from the nearest drug rehabilitation programs. This is the first step in the journey of recovery. A certified healthcare provider will evaluate the condition of the addict and will refer him to an inpatient rehab facility, out-patient treatment center, support group or a psychiatrist.

Moreover, the effects of addiction should be the pushing force that will lead an abuser to a decision to live a drug free life.
