subject: Movies That Will Celebrate Mumbai [print this page]

After heralding the glory of Delhi with Da da da da Dilli.. Dilli.. in No One Killed Jessica, it's time soak in the spirit of Amchi Mumbai once again with debutant director Kiran Raos Dhobi Ghat.

Mumbai for all trademark elements high rise buildings, low-lying slums, Bollywoods glitterati, mafia and underworld, the deep seas and most importantly the never-say-die attitude, has not just been the first love of many film makers but has also enticed many to dive into the depths of the city and explore a story idea.

Here are some of the movies celebrating one or the other aspect of the city of dreams Mumbai:

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries): Produced by Aamir Khan and directed by wife Kiran Rao, this movie explores various aspects of Mumbai through the eyes of four disparate characters, who slip away from the comforts of familiar moorings and are inexorably drawn into compelling relationships. The movie has been shot at various places in Mumbai, including the famous Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, Mohommad Ali Road, which became the residence of real life couple Aamir and Kiran during the shoot, Marine Drive and Chowpatty.

Bhindi Baazaar INC: Set in the underbelly of Mumbai, between the infamous by-lanes where 'Greed is a Culture' and 'Deceit becomes a Compulsion'. The film revolves around gangs of Mumbai who have embraced pick pocketing as an art and a means of earning a livelihood. They use their intelligence as a canvas and their spontaneity as a brush to survive in this dangerous profession.

Tera Kya Hoga Johnny: Director Sudhir Mishra finds his long delayed movie set at a time when Mumbai wants to be Shanghai. The movie is about the city, Parvez (Neil Nitin Mukesh) and Johnny - a child who sells tea on its streets (Sikandar Agarwal). With various characters and their rich topographical details, Mishra has tried to expose the socio economic class system plaguing the financial capital of the country.

That Girl In Yellow Boots: Another controversial masterpiece from director Anurag Kashyap, this movie takes you on a multihued and dangerous journey through underbelly of Mumbai through the eys of Ruth, played by Kalki Koechlin. From girls in massage parlours to thugs of the drug rackets, the movie exposes the murkier facet of the city where sex trade is rampant despite all barriers.

Department & The Business Man: These movies can be aptly referred to as extensions of director Ram Gopal Varmas fascination for gangster plot. After making movies like Satya, D and Company, Varma is all set to explore Mumbai;s underworld and its crime nexus yet again with Department & The Business Man. With Department, Varma is will talk about the relationship between police and underworld.

Shorr: This movie is a gritty, funny composite portrait of Mumbai, inspired from daily newspaper stories. We hope this venture from Ekta Kapoor does as good as Love Sex or Dhoka!
