subject: Running Tips - Dealing With Dogs On A Run [print this page]

Most runners at one time or another will have to deal with dogs on their runs. Some dogs are friendly and really just want to say hello. Others are not so friendly. Here are some tips on how to deal with those unfriendly dogs.

When you see an approaching dog the first thing to do is to look it in the eye. At the same time, I will point at the dog while loudly and forcefully saying one of the following. Either say, "Stay" or "Go Home'. This will usually work to make the dog stop and turn the other way. If you are in a neighborhood - this may cause the owner to hear you and come to retrieve the dog.

If this doesn't work, look on the ground around you. Look for a stick or something similar that you can pick up quickly. Usually pointing this at the dog while you are saying "Stay" will make the dog stop and turn away.

If none of this makes the dog stop, try crossing the street or turn around and go the other way. It may make you go out of your way, but it's better than having problems with a dog. The dog probably thinks that you are invading his territory and when you turn the other way, he will stop bothering you.

Also, if you encounter the same dog time and time again on your run, make sure that you turn the dog into the animal control authorities. I always hate to do this, but truthfully, you may be helping the dog and keeping him from getting hurt or killed.

I am an animal lover at heart and always hate to have a dog come after me. It usually doesn't enter my mind that the dog may want to hurt me. In my mind, he just wants to play and go for a run with me. And, I'm afraid that he will get hit by a car if I can't shoo him back to his yard. I don't carry pepper spray as I know that some runners do, because I really don't want to harm the dog in any way.

Most of the time, dogs are on a leash and will not bother you. But, just in case you come across one that has gotten loose, these tips will help you to get by him safely without getting bit.
