subject: Tanu Weds Manu Music Review [print this page]

Krsna, first time composer with Tanu Weds Manu offers no new sounds with his debut; using all the musical tropes we are used to hearing. His is not a grand entry, rather one who were over-familiar with, his tunes and tricks enmeshed in our system; its sticky to comb him from the achievers. Hes bang in the middle of Bollywood groove. Its for him now, to gather speed, or lag behind, in a rat race on a revolving dance floor.

Sadi Gali, the first track opens right in the middle of a celebration, theres no prelude, and you cant help feeling odd if your limbs dont begin to act on their own. Lehmber Hussainpuri infuses it with such infectious rhythm, his voice in sync with the hooks; this is one song you are going to hear a lot in the coming days if you havent already heard it long ago, which only goes to reiterate how Krsna is coming from familiar terrain he knows what we will swing to.

A composer you will mix him up with is Pritam, having just rocked to Sadi Gali, Krsna serves up Mohit Chauhan, a la Pritam style, in Yun Hi. It has a Pee Loon flavour, in a slumber mood, one that will grow on you, hopefully with a glass of take your pick; champagne, chai, chaasni because soon you will out grow its syrupy sweetness just as you rarely tune in to Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met.

Then arrives Rangrez; ghisa-pita lyrics on first listen rang de, basanti chola, balam, saajan, piya, tan, man, ishqiya the whole flower basket, words plucked like marigold petals sprayed over its qawalli arrangement, showering every musician in the house to try and over-power orchestration with his dhol, tabla, string or clap instrument. Because of its uneven structure, and hurried-verbose lyrics Rangrez flips to deliver its blemishes with a most accurate improviso performance; one that is graceful even when in the throes of its vacillating junoon. Wadali Brothers do one version, exemplary, another by Krsna himself, who sounds like Rahman when pitching high, only briefly, then Himesh, or Daler? Rangrez is his self assured on-the-marquee roar.

Roop Kumar Rathods Piya ballad tends to dodder into Sultan Khan territory, but otherwise, its quite gentle, even pleasant and not seeped in the pathos of the latters ode to a piya who has flown out of a heart cage.

Sunidhi Chauhan, Ujjaini, Rakhi Chand a cackle of girls rouse up Mannu Bhaiya from his torpor, teasing him with bawdy lines about Tanu missus-to-be. Singer Niladri joins them to tickle Mannu Bhaiya as well this situational track is bound to pep up the silver screen. Mannu Bhaiya ka kari hai!

Mika gets the motormouth number Jugni a techno bhangra track thats a little smooth with its reduced tempo. Some great keyboard arrangement, the track works at a middling level, never soaring into a full-blown dance number, good for the gaddi boom box.

With the many influences one sees in Krsnas music, and which we think covers everything from Rahman to Sajid-Wajid, heres a music composer who does not want to sound zara hatke if there is room for one more, excuse please, let him in.
