subject: A Brief Know About Of Synthetic Leather [print this page]

Synthetic Leather or the artificial leather is a fabric intended to be used as the substitute for leather in various fields such as furniture industry, upholstery, textile industry, footwear, etc. are to name a few. Basically the artificial leather is used in all the fields where a leather finish is required, but because of some ethical reasons or unsuitability or the cost factor, the use of actual leather is prohibited.

Types of synthetic leather

"Poromerics: the poromerics are also known as poromeric imitation leathers, are the synthetic leather or the breathable leather substitutes that are originally prepared from plastic coating on the fibrous base. It is much beneficial than the natural leather because of its durability and its high gloss finish that is easy to clean. Its stiffness and lack of breath-ability are the factors that add to the limitation of this artificial leather.

"Koskin: the artificial leather, commonly found in the cases and bags of laptops, is koskin. Its applications are Targus and Belkin laptop bags, CD covers/wallets, etc.

"Leatherette: this artificial leather is made by the process of covering a fabric base with plastic. The fabric can be the natural or the synthetic fibre that is covered with a soft PVC layer afterwards. The applications of this type of artificial leather includes leatherette bound books and the cameras used in 20th century. The limitation of leatherette is that there are no pours to allow the air pass through it. This feature makes the leather sweaty and of no use in case of clothing, car seat covers, etc. But in case of cars, there is one advantage that when compared to actual leather the synthetic leather requires a very little maintenance.

PVC Leather Cloth

PVC, abbreviated for Polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic polymer. PVC is a vinyl polymer that is made up of repeating ethenyls having one of their hydrogens replaced with a chloride group. This material is cheap, durable and easy to assemble which makes it useful in construction field. By adding some plasticizers, you can convert the hard PVC into a softer and flexible material which can further be easily used in various fields like, clothing and upholstery, in manufacturing of flexible pipes and tubing, flooring, for roofing membranes, electrical cable insulation, etc. Such kinds of material are also useful in manufacturing of inflatable products such as waterbeds, pool toys, etc.

PVC Leather Cloth is useful in number of industries such as:

"Automotive Industry: seat covers, door covers, dashboard and various areas related to the automotive parts.

"Footwear Industry: vinyl for footwear, PVC coated textile fabric, faux leather, and artificial leather.

"Luggage Industry: hand bags, laptop bags, mobile covers, eye-wear cases.

"Stationery: used for files, folders, writing case covers, etc.

"Furniture Industry: furnishing vinyl or the decorating vinyl is used for couches, upholstery, and for decorating unique spots.

"Sports Industry: manufacturing and export of soccer balls, sportsmen gloves, etc.

People assume that synthetic leather is an inferior a cheap material, but with the advanced technology the artificial leather is now made equal to or surpass the real leather. Thus, synthetic leather manufacturers now enjoy the choice between the real and artificial leather depending on the application.
