An important copy which needs to be kept properly is the Form 4473. This can also be called as the eForm 4473 for users of the digital format. This is the Firearms Transaction Record which serves as the hard copy of the transactions involving the firearm which have been done in the past. Technically, this document has to be kept within 20 years from the date of purchase or disposition.
Is it difficult to apply for FFL?
The answer to this one is not a clear yes or no. Filing for FFL involves accomplishing proper documents, going through the process and paying for fees. If you have no idea on how to accomplish everything, then getting an FFL would be like going through the eye of a needle. On the other hand, if you know the exact steps that are involved and you comply with all the requirements, then you would not experience any problems.
Are there fees involved in applying for FFL?
Yes, filing the application involves payment too. The fees will differ according to the type of firearm or device. The purpose of getting an FFL will also determine the amount of fees to settle. The exact amount of license fees that have to be paid can be found in Title 27 CFR, Chapter II, Part 478Commerce in Firearms and Ammunition.
For non-destructive devices, the fees are somewhere within $30 to $200 for 3 years, plus a renewal fee of $30 to $150 which has to be settled every 3 years. For destructive devices, the filing fee is $3,000 with a renewal fee of $3,000. Manufacturers can file for FFL for ammunition which costs $30 for application that is valid for 3 years, plus $30 renewal fee every 3 years.
The amount of application fees will vary depending on the purpose of applying, if he/she is a manufacturer, importer, pawnbroker, dealer or collector.
Is it possible for an FFL application to be disapproved?
Yes, of course. There are too many reasons why an FFL application can possibly be denied. It may be because of incomplete requirements, abbreviated or missing information on the application form, non-compliance to qualifications and others.
If the FFL application is denied the first time, does this mean dead end?
No. There are occasions when individuals and businesses are denied for FFL the first time and were able to obtain approval after reapplying. When filing for application again, it is best to discover the reason for denial first and make sure that it is corrected before filing for a second application. Accomplish all requirements carefully too.
It has to be noted that reapplication means wasting time and spending more money so it is important to do it right the first time.
Is there are way to increase the probability of getting approval?
One effective way is to get an FFL application kit. This will give you a clear walk-through of the steps involved in the process.
