Get Antivirus Software
Get Antivirus Software

One of the first mistakes laptop owners make is surfing the net after firing up their new laptop. This is a big mistake. The moment you connect to the Internet, youre already exposed.

The first course of action is to get antivirus software. Normally, theres already one provided on your laptop, but its only a trial period. Thats a bummer, because youll have to pay to get the rest of the features. Its main benefit is that you have a big suite of options when it comes to protection.

There are free software though, such as the one provided by Windows. Thats a great one just make sure you keep it updated.

Update Windows

Another thing you should do is immediately update Windows. Most likely, the Windows that comes with your laptop is stock. This means that it doesnt have any updates, and your computer is behind the times.

You should immediately update Windows because in doing so, youll get improved performance and a bunch of other features that will help Windows do its job better. The updates automatically install, so you dont have to worry about anything. Just download it and wait for it to finish.

Try Out Browsers

Most likely theres nothing on your new computer except Internet Explorer. Once you open your computer though, you shouldnt be limited to IE. You should try out plenty of other browsers out there, such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

While Internet Explorer is catching up (and is actually good nowadays), feel free to see which browser works for you. Some people are heavily invested in Googles services, so they choose Chrome to consolidate everything in one window.

Transfer Your Old Files

Of course, one of the first things you should do is transfer your old files from your desktop/laptop to officially make your new laptop your new home.

There are many ways to transfer your files. The most common is through an external hard drive or solid state drive.

Another thing you can do is use Windows Easy Transfer. All you need is an Easy Transfer Cable and youre all set. Just hook up both ends of the cable and you can easily transfer everything from your old hard drive to the new one.
