subject: Processes Involved In Building A Dune Buggy [print this page]

Many people are amazed on the performance and attractiveness of a dune buggy. This is one of the favourite vehicles of people who love adventure especially off-road escapades. Dune buggies are different from one another because many of them are personally built and are customized in accordance to the preference of the rider or driver.

What are the characteristics of the dune buggy?

The buggy is basically a vehicle that is very light. The lightness had to be established in order for it to easily undertake off-road activities. It gets its power from a modified engine and an open engine. One notable characteristic of the dune buggy is the very large tires. These large tires are necessary to enable the dune buggy to easily navigate the sand which happens to be the usual traversed terrain.

Today, this vehicle had become too diversified, and its variety is dependent on the kind of terrain on which this vehicle is driven.

The reason why the dune buggy is widespread is to incorporate off-road capabilities. This includes the indoor track racing. However, there are units of dune buggy that are used as on-road vehicles also. They also are driven through beaches and deserts. When you consider building this vehicle, its function has to be analysed and considered. Just at the designing stage, the function is always integrated in order to have the construction achieve the safety features and maximum comfort.

The construction of the dune buggy

There are two ways of constructing the dune buggy. First method is merely altering an already existing vehicle. The other way is to construct the vehicle from scratch, meaning you have to get all the parts in place and start putting them together by welding steel tubing together.

The model of the dune buggy is patterned after the old Volkswagen bug. This is why the dune buggy has an engine that is mounted at the rear. This kind of engine mounting allows the vehicle to have higher traction. The engine modification consists of air cooled engine. There is no need for a radiator. With the bug vehicle as the model, it could be deduced that the term buggy also came from Volkswagen bug.

When you try to build a buggy from scratch, the builder should have sufficient knowledge on fabrication. The process of welding the steel tubing together is also known as space frame chassis. When fabricating, the fabricator can alter the different parts of the vehicle and the kind of fabrication is dependent on the terrain to be traversed.

You have the two methods of building a dune buggy; these are altering a vehicle and putting together steel tubing. Some builders put the two methods together and they come up with a temporary fix or a blend of the two designs.
