The historic centre of Sydney is just 25 sq km, while the metropolitan area is almost as extended as the metropolitan area of London, but is almost completely covered by green areas and national parks. The city has a fairly temperate climate and is not exposed to hurricanes as the other Australian cities are, making it a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world. Another interesting feature is its Port Jackson, which is the worlds largest port, and the largest natural harbour the world Sydney also has over 70 city beaches, which attracts surfers all year round. Going there would mean you could volunteer abroad and have a great time too.

Sydney boasts the record of the oldest city in Australia. It was founded in 1788 as a penal colony by Arthur Phillip on behalf of the British, but soon developed into a small town. It was mostly populated by immigrants who were forced into Australia for breaking British laws. After the country developed those people were allowed to start anew and go in search of their fortune. The largest increase of non-law breaking population can in the first half of the 1800s with the gold rush which rapidly increased the industrialization of the country; eventually turning it into what we see today.
The geography of Sydney is quite complex, the city includes a flat area to the south called the Cumberland Plain. Then there is its oldest hilly area which then comes to the Plateau and North Shore, whose development was favoured by the construction of the Harbour Bridge in the late 20s. In the south there is also the developed financial and directional heart of the city, aka the Central Business District, which is full of skyscrapers and modern structures, such as the famous Opera House. At the edge of this district are the most important city parks, like Hyde Park and a district visited by tourists called the Darling Harbour.
