subject: What Are The Best Dogs For Your Kids? [print this page]

We know that dog breeds are usually prone to certain behaviors, with some being friendly, loving, and dedicated, while others are bouncy and enthusiastic. Some dogs just bond to one person, and can be very standoffish to everyone else. Some don't like other animals, and some aren't great for children. So how can you find the right pet for your family? Here's what you need to look for when you're getting a dog and you need to think about the kids.

When you consider a pet for your family, there are a number of factors you're going to need to check out. What kind of personality does the dog have? How large is it, how much space does it need to be happy and healthy, and how much attention does the dog require? Just about every dog can be a great family pet, if you know how to treat and train him. However, a few breeds are a little more naturally suited for kids. That's why they're so popular as family dogs.

Labrador Retrievers

The most popular dog in the US, Labs can be a bundle of fun, if you know what to do with them. They're also energetic, require careful training, and are big enough to get out of hand if you don't know how to deal with them. Labs are fond of children, love to play and can be lots of fun. They love to socialize with everyone and don't require a lot of grooming, although they do shed quite a bit. Make sure you have the time and energy to give them the exercise and attention they require.

Poodles

Poodles might seem like a strange dog for families, at least if you believe their delicate, froofy reputation. But poodles were originally bred to be working dogs, much like Labs. They're playful, lovable, and affectionate if you raise them correctly, and they work well with other animals and children. They're a low dander dog that can be good for people with sensitivities, and are quite intelligent. The range of sizes can also be a bonus. However, you do need to make sure you can provide enough play time and attention, and that you're ready to deal with regularly grooming their dense curls.

Beagles

Small, energetic, and enthusiastic, beagles are an outgoing choice. They love fetch, tracking games, and exploring, and are fond of children. However, they do shed heavily, despite their short coats, are prone to wander if they don't have a fence to keep them in, and bay loudly when very excited. These are all factors to keep in mind if you're thinking about a beagle.

Collies

Most of us associate the collie with the famous show Lassie. These caring, intelligent dogs were bred to herd, and they don't really care whether they're herding sheep or kids. They like people and are easy to train. Know that their herding instincts may cause them to nip at your family's heels from time to time. A collie has significant grooming requirements, and this breed can respond strongly to mistreatment or neglect. Treat your collie well, however, and it'll be a great family pet.

While all dogs have different personalities and respond favorably to training, these breeds are considered the top child-friendly family dogs. Keep these in mind when you start your search for a new dog for your family.
