subject: Stomach, Intestine And Liver Problems And Social Security [print this page]

The medical history surrounding the inability to work is very important. People who have stomach, intestine and liver problems find it very difficult to work while dealing with these illnesses. Among some of the diseases that are recognized by the Social Security Administration as being debilitating diseases are:

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): This is a disease that involves much stomach pain and cramping, changes in bowel movements and the symptoms may get worse over time. The cause of this disease is unknown but it can be very severe and life altering.

Hepatitis B/C: Swelling of the liver due to an infection of the Hepatitis B virus. This is caused by blood transfusions, sexual contact, tattoos or sharing of personal items. There may be no symptoms of hepatitis B at first, but then it increases into a long period of feeling sick. Then, the infected person becomes violently ill. The symptoms include appetite loss, exhaustion, pain in muscles and joints, low fever and yellowing skin.

Peptic Ulcer Disease: Painful sores in the stomach or small intestine. Symptoms of peptic ulcers are burning pain in the stomach, bloating, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and serious pain in the stomach.

Chronic Liver Disease: Progressive destruction of the liver that is caused by a host of other life-threatening diseases. The signs and symptoms are tiredness, hyperventilation, jaundice and bruising.

Upper Gastrointestinal Hemorrhaging: When there is bleeding in the digestive system caused by some non-serious conditions but also may be due to stomach, intestine and liver problems or intestinal polyps in the digestive system. The symptoms might include bleeding from the rectum, blood on toilet paper or in toilet bowl or vomiting blood.

Diverticulitis: When there are small, bulging pouches of the intestinal lining that become enlarged. This disease causes tenderness in the stomach, bloating or gas, chills, nausea, vomiting, fever and decreased appetite.

Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas that affects the digestive system and insulin production. The symptoms of pancreatitis include stomach pain, chills, fever, yellowing skin, clammy skin, nausea, vomiting, weakness and excessive weight loss.

Cirrhosis: When the liver is scarred and functions poorly this is the final phase of chronic liver disease. The symptoms are confusion, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, chronic nosebleeds, swelling of the stomach, throwing up blood, weakness, losing weight and yellowing skin.

Crohns Disease: This disease, which affects the digestive system, is characterized by inflammation of the bowel or intestine. The symptoms include belly pain, fever, loss of appetite, changes in bowel movements, weight loss and drowsiness.

Stomach, intestine and liver problems can be debilitating diseases that keep you out of work for long periods of time. If your doctor has told you that you will no longer be able to work because of a stomach, intestine, or liver problem, you may qualify for social security disability.
