Well we are back at Wimbledon! not one year on after the success of Federer Williams and our very own Jonny Marray, but just three weeks! Yes its Olympic Tennis what a feat of sport the very best athletes in the world in a once in a lifetime appearance here on our very own shores in little old GB.. After an amazing opening ceremony giving the world a view of our past and present, the serious competition begins and today saw the start of the Tennis. Players from 45 countries are competing over nine days of competition.
There are sixty four in the mens draw and the same number in the womens section. Thirty two in the mens and womens draw. And 16 in the mixed doubles. Anyone who thinks that it is not taken seriously nineteen of the worlds top twenty will be there, the only exceptions are American Mardy Fish and the French women Marion Bartoli. It is the first time that the event will be held on grass since Tennis returned to the Olympics twenty four years ago. It is the strongest line up ever, and restrictions on what they wear is removed it does not have to be white! More entertainment!
So who are the runners and riders, well for team GB we have Andy Murray in the mens singles, Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha in the Ladies, Andy and brother Jamie in the doubles in addition to Colin Fleming and Ross Huthins. Then in the womens doubles we have the youngsters Laura Robson and Heather Watson. Team USA have the Williams sisters and Andy Rodddick Serbia have Djokovic and of course Switzerland have Mr Roger Federer. We are missing Nadal through injury but Spain do have the impresive David Ferrer and France have Jo-Tsonga.
All the top womens players are in SW9 Sharapova for Russia, Radwanska for Poland Azarenka for Belarus. Denmarks only entry is former world number one Caroline Wozniacki Germany have the two Wimbledon semi finalist and quarter finalist Kerber and Lisicki. Finally Italy have open finalist Sara Errani in their line up.
Mixed doubles are included in the Olympics for the first time since 1924, and all seedings are based on the ATP and WTA rankings released on July the 23rd. A special mention goes to India player Leander Paes he is in the mens doubles and will be the first tennis player to compete in six yes six consecutive Olympics wow what a record he made his debut in Barcelona in 1992 and won the mens bronze medal at Atlanta in 1996.
Did you know the country with the most all time medals in Olympic Tennis is.. team Great Britain with 47. USA have 34 with France on 19 Germany on 12 and Spain on 11. But our last medal was with Tim Henman and Neil Broad in the doubles in Atlanta in 1996 and it was silver. Henman was just 21.
