subject: Underwear As Outerwear: Are You A Fan? [print this page]

Lately there seems to be a trend for clothing designed to resemble underwear, from lace bralets to tights that are made to look like stockings. Whether you love it or loath it, the fact of the matter is that this trend look like it will be sticking around for a while. If you are wanting to embrace the new fashion but do not want to look as though you have got dressed whilst intoxicated, here are our top tips for taking advantage of the underwear as outerwear trend.

Lace is one of those fabrics that when worn correctly can look fantastic, if worn the wrong way you can end up looking like a fan at a Madonna concert. One of the best ways to utilise lace is to layer it with other fabrics to give a sultry, stylish look. In terms of underwear as outerwear, team a lace bralet or camisole with a leather jacket for instant edge. If you do not fancy baring your flesh in just a bralet or cami, a hint of lace peeking out from underneath a black vest top can be just as effective. Experiment with different colours to create different lace effects.

Ask any lady what her top essential wardrobe items are and a pair of tights will no doubt be somewhere near the top. Over the last few years tights have developed from the standard, sheer, tan, black and fishnet varieties to include endless patterns and colour combinations. One of the most common styles of fashion tights is the faux stocking look. Made popular by female celebrities, this fantastic design takes inspiration from the stockings and suspender belt style. Many fashionistas pair theirs with a mini skirt to show off the detail of the tights. If you are not brave enough to show that much leg, why not pair your tights with a wrap dress or pencil skirt with a slit, ideal for giving a glimpse without giving away the full show.

Obviously if there weather stays how it has been this summer you may be looking for other alternatives for underwear fashion, a pair of long johns over your jeans or perhaps even a thermal vest for a night out, the choices are endless! Use your own personality to turn a trend into a personal style expression and you never know you may end up with a few followers of your own!
