Annulments, Common Law Marriage, Community Property, Palimony Myths Explained

Sometimes people or couples approach a Frederick custody or divorce lawyer to ask about what I politely refer to as non-typical divorce issues or custody issues. They ask about Annulments, Common Law marriages, Community Property, and Palimony. They opine things like:

everybody knows after ten years we were married by common law.

Everybody knows...She cant sell that TV because its community property

Everybody knows Hes gonna have to pay me palimony because we were together 10 years

Everybody knows if we were married less than (12 months...6 months...30 days...24 hours) I can get an annulment.

EVERYBODY knows, absolutely EVERYBODY!!! Hmmm?

Call this thinking urban myths, urban legends, ... Like everybody knows a guy who a guy who....knows a guy who.... It amazes what people think is common knowledge but is in fact urban myth.

I mean really smart people, will come into a Frederick Maryland divorce or custody lawyers office and say these things.

These are people whom you have known your whole life and it makes me really wonder how much of what I just know is unicorns and fuzzy wuzzies.

All Frederick Maryland Divorce Laware covered by the laws of the State of Maryland, and in Maryland:

There is no common law marriage.

There is no community property.

There is no palimony.

None, zero, thats it. And as for annulments, they are very, very, very few and far between. Most career divorce and custody lawyers have never even met, let alone represented, someone who is entitled to an annulment. I have only represented one and only been involved with a firm that represented one other. Thats not many. But, you can still call me.

Maybe you can tell me what unicorns I am keeping in my stable of knowledge.
