subject: China Has Entered The stranger Society And Indifference Of Humanity Can Be Seen Everywhere [print this page] Nowadays in China, in many cases few of the passersby are willing to help when they see an old man fall down on the street. The frequent report of such kind of incident has caused wide heartache and confusion: why the relationship between people can be so cold?
Apathy is not an accident. With a little attention, most people will find that we are used to treating strangers with alert eyes and suspicion in mind.
In the kindergartens, the little children are told of not eating candies offered by the strangers ", and "does opening doors for strangers"; at home the told aged people are told of not answering the phone dialed from a "strange of phone number ", and not accepting the recommendation from strangers when they want to buy some products. " At the Bank door placed a precaution is put up which reads: "do not transfer money to a strange account; in the community police working station a poster was posted: "do not chat with strangers when they accost ". It is blamed that indifference of humanity can be seen everywhere in China.
Up to the end of 2010, in China, more than 20 cities have held the population of more than 5 million, including mega-cities like Beijing and Shanghai where the population has exceeded 20 million. Some sociologists hold that China has entered the "stranger society". The United States
Most people instinctively want to change strangers into acquaintances because they believe that acquaintances are more trustworthy" and "good acquaintances can really do some help. As to a stranger whom they meet for the first time, they choose not to believe him or her. In the public places, people keep a close eye on their own package, and if someone delegates packages, mostly people will shake his head to refuse the requirement. Faced with the strangers asking for help, people may ponder whether there may be a trap or not. When people see thief committing theft, they will hesitate as whether to intervene or not, fear of the retaliation afterward. The special cases reported by the media that the helpers have been blackmailed seem to prove that peoples worry of the trouble has been reasonable. Such being the case, it seems that most people in China believe that they themselves are trustworthy. On contrary, they believe that others as long as they are strangers are not trustworthy.
However, the indifference is not a must in the stranger society and people can get along well with each other as long as they abide by the law which is fair to everybody.
