subject: Important Information About Training Your Dog [print this page]

You can train your dog to the point where he will not bark excessively, growl or exhibit aggressive behavior. The tips in this article can be used to help train negative behavior out of dogs, and teach them positive behaviors. Any pet can be an ideal one if trained properly.

Your dog needs to feel a sense of safety for him to be properly trained, this is a good tip to follow. If they do not feel safe, they may show bad behavior. To prevent this from happening with your dog, always make sure his environment is conducive to feelings of comfort and safety.

Positive reinforcement should include more than just dog treats. Giving treats to dogs in order to teach them new behavior is quite effective. You most likely do not have treats available at any given time, especially when training is not in progress. For this reason, learn to use praise and attention by rubbing, patting and hugging your dog to reinforce the good behavior.

Be mindful of how long the sessions are when you train your dog. If you spend too much time doing one training exercise, your dog will become bored. This is why you need to limit the time of your training sessions to around 10 minutes.

Be consistent with your dog training to make sure your animal stays obedient to the rules it has been learning. Often dog owners will stop enforcing the rules that their dog learned in their training courses. Pets share a lot of the same habitual learning that humans do. So, it's very important that you review your training with your dog regularly.

Take small steps when crate training your dog. Once your dog seems to have acclimated to the crate itself, close the gate and feeding him through it. Start off small, like 10 seconds at a time, and slowly move up the times. Freaking out your dog is a sign that you need to slow down.

A crate can come in handy when housebreaking a dog. Take your dog outside frequently and try to maintain a regular schedule in order to maximize the effectiveness of the crate. You will have fewer accidents if you take the time to crate train your dog.

If you lack patience or cannon remain even-tempered during the training session, do not push forward. If you are impatient, your dog will become anxious and be unable to focus on learning.

If you catch your puppy chewing something that he should not be chewing, put an immediate stop to it. This teaches your puppy what is acceptable to chew, making it less likely that he will chew your belongings when you are not able to watch him closely.

Dog training shouldn't be a battle, and dog owners are now learning that. The important part of dog training is to have the right information and understand that it is not impossible. Some dogs may require a little more time or possibly a different training technique; however, successful dog training requires patience from the owner.
