subject: A Helpful Drug For People Who Suffer From Migraine Headaches And Epilepsy [print this page]

Topamax is an anti-seizure drug used in the treatment of epilepsy in both children and adults. It is also prescribed off-label for the prevention of migraine headache. Generally, Topamax dosage comes in tablet and "sprinkle capsule" form. Sprinkle capsules can be taken as such or opened and sprinkled in to food and taken. Topamax tablets are available in the strength of 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg, and Topamax sprinkle capsules are available in the strength of 15 and 25 mg.

There are a number of factors that determine Topamax dosage for the treatment of epilepsy and other medical conditions. Such factors include age of the patient, the medical condition being treated, other medications being taken, and other medical conditions that the patient have.

Topamax dosage:

1. Treatment of epilepsy in adults and children above 10 years: When Topamax is used alone, the recommended dosage for the treatment of epilepsy is 200 mg two tmes a day. The physician gradually increases the drug dosage from 25 mg to a maximum of 200 mg over period of some weeks time.

But, when used along with other epileptic drugs, the recommended dosage is between 100 mg to 200 mg twice a day for partial seizures and 200 mg twice a day for generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Similar to mono therapy, in adjunctive therapy also the recommended dosage should be increased steadily to the prescribed dose.

For kids between the ages of 2 to 10, the drug dosage will be calculated by the health care provider based on the child's weight.

Generally, Topamax dosage is taken twice daily. However, when there is a need to increase this dosage, it should be done gradually at a rate of 25 mg for the first week twice daily. This amount can be increased to 50 mg that should be taken two times a day.

2. Treatment of migraine headache: The recommended Topamax dosage for migraine headache is 50 mg two, taken twice a day.

Summary: Topamax is a prescription anti-seizure medication, which should be taken exactly as recommended by the doctor. Taking smaller or larger doses than prescribed, prevents the person from getting the best results or benefits from the mediation. Keep in mind that it's very important to check with your medical doctor before consuming the drug for this type of treatment. It is only a doctor that can analyze these factors correctly to determine the correct Topamax dosage for you.
