subject: Dynamics Gp Report Writer Unknown Error Message And Popular Fix [print this page]

Report Writer is Dexterity application with its default reports such as Blank SOP Invoice form, Historical Trial Balance and Batch Edit just to open long list. What you often need is modified reports. For example good idea is to place your company logo on SOP Invoice. What you do is you open SOP Blank or Long Invoice in RW and modify it there. As soon as you modify it goes into Reports.dic and its location is described in Dynamics.set file. This dictionary is meta business logic description which is read by Dexterity in print generation. Lets review one of well known errors:

1.Unknown Error. Would you like to send it to Microsoft? And this might happen when you generate printout. Lets first recommend fix and then discuss possible causes and how to avoid them in the future

2.The fix. Have all users log off Great Plains. Then rename your Reports.dic into something like Corrupt.dic. Then login client interface and in RW. The path here is Tools -> Customize. Select product Dynamics GP (in older versions it may read as Dynamics). As original dictionary was renamed the list will be empty. Click on Import button and pick Corrupt.dic file. The last step is pick them one-by-one on the right side and insert and finally initiate the process of importing

3.What was the problem as the fix seems to be a bit magical? We have seen this issue many times and it seems what happens is the following. Users are modifying forms while their coworkers are printing and modifying others. Think about the fact that it is business logic metabase and its data storage is more complex comparing to regular SQL tables. There might be conflicts in locking and saving between several users. We have seen scenarios when this thing happens when users are frequently loading customization packages (multi company environment where each one has its own logo in invoice)

Lets now answer question related to this issue:

Q. We are actually on Microsoft Great Plains 7.0 with Pervasive SQL database. Is this solution applicable to our situation?

A. Of course Dynamics GP 2010 has more features and compatible with Windows7 and 64 bit computing and we understand your concern. However in our consulting practice we have seen this issue in version 5.0 through 2010. So you can definitely try it. Be sure that you have old file backup in case when you need roll back

Q. We got the same thing and local consultant recommended export all modified reports as customization packages and import them back. Should it work?

A. Yes it should. We would additionally recommend you the dictionary before reimporting packages

Q. Does it work all the times?

A. Question is a bit generic. Your situation might be unique so it is better to be a little bit reserved and review your case separately. But in our opinion if you have backup you can try it and roll back in the case of failure
