subject: The Clear Path Of Information Technology [print this page] A conclusion seems to be brewing in information technology nowadays that it applies and shows off. The technology that we are using today becomes more complex albeit being easier and simpler to manage. And a conclusion within this conclusion is showing nowadays as to how IT has been relating to business.
This kind of paradox is nothing new to IT. Going back to the days when DOS with its command-line user interface was the paramount operating system being used by many computers. It is not possible to just use a computer that has DOS running without learning how to use the interface firsthand. Even though this kind of old school computers was hard to utilize, the purpose of its operating system was straightforward. At this time, Apple has been creating and selling computers with a graphical user interface which made their use more intuitive than the current technology available. Yet this kind of operating system was even more complex to use than DOS.
And then DOS was succeeded by Windows, which triggered a race to making computing even easier for people to do. Yet even though the computing and use was made easier for people, its internal coding has become even more complex than before.
Ever since, the gap in what was required for users to experience and what they experience has grown even bigger. We can see this today in various disruptive technologies such as cloud computing. For the normal end-user, these cloud-based services come in the form of Apple's iCloud and Salesforce.com, being cost effective and intuitive solutions even if users are just using wireless Internet.
Tablets and smart phones are also other examples of this. Aside from giving people an easier user experience, these devices are becoming far more superior to their predecessors that have just been launched a few years back. The processing power, built in features and functions of these devices have become more complex and powerful internally. Smart phones today features a dual-core central processing unit that can run up to 1GHz and some have even graphics processing units.
The role for IT today has already been fueled by its customers and other IT trends. Yet still its true charter remains to be the use of information technologies in order to benefit businesses. And even though there is still the ongoing complexity and commoditization nowadays, information technology has even more of a purpose to make this drive a reality to do transformational changes in the business world.
