subject: Things To Do Before Heading Out For A Vacation [print this page]

Vacation is something everyone looks forward to. As soon as we come back from one vacation, we start planning for the next vacation. Getting ready for the vacation and planning out things take quite a lot of time and we miss out doing some things before heading out. The result is a smelly house and more uncomfortable things that we have to confront after coming back. The vacation which starts in a happy mood will end unhappily if we dont take proper care of the things we have to do before the vacation. Of course, we plan and do some things to get going comfortably after coming back but often we find that some small things we forgot to do have become a pain in the neck. Below are some things that can be done to avoid such things.

The first thing to do is to pay all the bills due until the day of the return. If you forget to pay the bills the service may be stopped or you may have to pay more as a penalty. Therefore, check your bills and pay all the bills that are due.

Set the timers on the radio and lights such that they are turned on for a particular time of the night. This will discourage burglars from entering your home. It is an easy way to prevent theft.

Inform your neighbors and friends that you will not be home for a while. You can also ask them to check on your home when they have time because this will ensure that your home and your belongings are safe.

If you are not taking your pets with you, arrange for a proper caretaker for your pet. You can spend the vacation happily if you leave your pets in safe hands.

Watering the plants properly before leaving could be relieving. Rather than asking a friend to water your garden, you can buy a water sprinkler which has a timer. You will not have to disturb your friends too much, plus you will have a fresh garden to welcome you back.

An important thing to do is to unplug the electronic appliances. As you wont be home for quite some time, you can reduce energy usage if you unplug your electronic appliances. You can also lower your thermostat by a few degrees so that not much energy is used.

Cleaning the kitchen is also very important. Dispose of old food and hang the rags and the kitchen towels to dry so that your kitchen doesnt turn smelly. Taking out the trash will help you prevent germs from spreading. This is a great way to protect your home from insects and other small creatures.

One of the most important things is getting a good and reliable security alarm for your home. Some providers like ADT Security Services give you the option of cell phone communication. Opt for this service so that you can be notified easily. You may be able to put up with a smelly home, but it is difficult for anyone to come back to an empty home. Therefore, choose a good security alarm to enjoy your vacation without any worries.

Shut all the windows and close the attic doors and garage. This will help you prevent small animals like opossums, rats, squirrels, etc from entering your home. People who forget to do this often find that their homes have become an abode of those freaking little creatures.

These are simple things you can do in order to have a happy vacation and smooth days afterward.
