subject: How Come Some Individuals Become Drunkards [print this page]

According to studies, one factor that impacts a person is alcohol addiction. In fact, 60 percent of people who use drugs or are alcoholic have genetic history that dictate them to become one. Nevertheless, it does not mean that, because one's parent or relative is suffering from alcoholism, he will eventually turn into one, too. There are many other elements that drive one to become overly addicted to liquor.

Bad Influence From Friends

There is no doubt that many of the alcoholics have grown to be dependent on alcohol because of peer pressure, particularly in countries that have a male-dominated culture. In these countries, a man who does not drink is regarded to be effeminate or a wimp. Of course, no man desires to be labeled as such. In effect, they give in to the pressure of their friends, and shortly find themselves addicted to liquor. Those who have become alcoholics seem to find it challenging to last a day without drinking any sort of alcohol constantly. What is worse is that they do not only do social drinking but, most of the time, hit or exceed their liquor threshold level and begin doing foolish things that drunk people do. However, it is not only the men who have become addicted to alcohol due to pressure from peers; even women in many countries today have become hooked on alcohol even at an early age. If you know someone who is addicted to alcohol, you have to know the ways to help an alcoholic by searching the Internet or consulting with professionals in rehabilitation.

Depression Can Make One An Alcoholic, Too

Aside from genetics and social influence or pressure from peers, another thing that presses one to be an alcoholic is despair. When we really come to think about it, it is common for many people to drown their sorrows in liquor. Since of course, liquor, for a few people, does not only provides them a liberating feel but satisfies their palates, too. However, if a person consumes a great amount of alcohol until he gets drunk and forgets all his problems, he is likely to develop addiction to alcohol even if he has no problems. Many alcoholics believe that liquor is their best companion that will never leave them no matter what comes about. What many people who drink and get drunk do not realize is that alcohol never solves their problems. In fact, they can even have greater problems because of their addiction to it.

What Alcoholics Should Watch Out For

While many alcoholics find short-term relief in liquor, the truth of the matter is that they are at risk of producing more problems, especially those health-related ones. The most typical health risk that comes with people who drink heavily and regularly is cirrhosis of the liver. And, because alcoholics often lose their self-consciousness when the spirit has seized their minds, they are likely to get into trouble because of their tactless language and actions. Hence, if you know somebody who is an alcoholic, be sure that you speak to him into getting someone who can help for alcohol addiction.

There are lots of factors that can make one an alcoholic, and those addicted to alcohol need professional help. It is alright to drink alcohol occasionally, but drinking an excessive amount and being dependent on alcohol will surely do no good to anyone.
