Going from Indie to Mainstream
After leaving his hometown of Eerie, PA, the lead singer Patrick Monahan left for California finally settling in San Francisco. He met up with another singer who was doing local shows at bars and coffee houses, Rob Hotchkiss. The two of them began playing together in a small band and eventually recruited Scott Underwood, Charlie Colin, and Jimmy Stafford to round out what would become Train. The band self-released their first album, titled Train, in 1998. The band was so successful with their independent release that they were touring and opening for big names like Counting Crows, Cracker, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Barenaked Ladies.
That self-titled first release was made on a limited budget and yet was able to produce some chart topping singles such as "Meet Virginia" and "Free". Then in 2001, the band released Drops of Jupiter, along with the lead single by the same name. The song was a huge success and the band in the top 100 on the Billboard charts. Drops of Jupiter also garnered the band international fame with the album hitting the top ten in England. Songs from the album have since gone on to be used in Rock Band 3 and other mainstream media.
Their next two albums, My Private Nation and For Me, It's You, did equally well and helped solidify the band as a mainstay in the music industry. Then Train went on a three year hiatus, returning with their fifth album, Save Me, San Francisco, and a hit song, "Hey, Soul Sister". The album marked a return for the rockers who also released their most successful secondary single, "If It's Love". With the release of California 37 and coming off of a Grammy Award win, Train is now setting up to hit many cities across the country for different events, including the Daytona 400.
Celebrating the 54th Annual Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola, Train will showcase their long list of smash hits in a 60-minute pre-show concert. Fans of the band and of NASCAR will be able to purchase tickets to the concert as well as VIP tickets that will get them plenty of perks including a chance to purchase the newest album.
