subject: The Biggest Reason Music Groups Break Up [print this page] You know that every band has its own dramaYou know that every band has its own drama. Watch any reality show about a musical group and there is always tension. One major point of tension is that everybody in a band thinks their job is the hardest. So, if you're in a band or manage one, consider this when your group is arguing. It always helps to see things from someone else's perspective.
The guitarist
The guitarist has all of those strings to deal with. They need to bring a certain energy to the stage by dancing around or else their audience won't like it. But, plenty a performance has been halted by a guitar playing tripping on his wires. Also, there are usually two or even three guitarists per group which can cause each one to feel they are not special. Typically, there is only one drummer, one main singer etc. which can make the guitarists feel in competition."
The singer
The main singer usually feels heightened pressure because everybody looks at them. Not only are they at the front in live performances, but they are usually at the front of photo shoots for magazines. They also stress because their instrument is in their own body. If they catch a cold, the show doesn't happen. The tiniest soar throat makes it hard for them to sing high notes and it makes them sing with vocal vibrato. Also, they have to perform breathing exercises for singing multiple times a day, which can be exhausting.
Background singers
If there are background singers, they feel they have the opposite problem as the main singer: no one pays attention to them! Many are just in the band hoping to become a main singer one day and get irritated when they believe their talent is undervalued.
The drummer
The drummer, more than anyone, usually feels that nobody knows him at all. And, that's often true. In most very big bands, the drummer is actually not recognized when he walks down the street. They also have the largest equipment to deal with packing, traveling with and setting up on stage.
The odd instruments
And every band will have guest appearances by violinists, flute players, a harp player--you name it. Many of these musicians, while in love with their particular instrument, feel it's very hard to get a main role in a band. Most songs only use the "conventional" instruments like those in this article, which makes it hard for these musicians to get stable positions in bands.
