subject: What Is A Good Diet? [print this page]

A lot of people are confused by the word dietA lot of people are confused by the word diet. A diet does not necessarily mean you are slimming or trying to eat less, a diet is basically what you eat each day. Everyday we are bombarded with people telling us what is good for us and what is not. Whether it is an article in a newspaper or a television programme, there are plenty of people out there who enjoy telling the world how to eat right to stay healthy. But what is best and what kind of foods should go into your diet?

One thing that many people encourage is free range and organic foods. Many people believe that this is more beneficial than eating things that are not organic or free range. A lot of shoppers believe that the chemicals added to some vegetables and fruits devalues their nutrition and therefore leading to organic being a healthier alternative. With free range food such as meat and dairy products, it is found that animals such as free range chickens eat more natural foods, which in turns leads to a healthier piece of meat.

Water is another thing that should be part of everyones daily diet. Water is what keeps us going, it keeps our bodily functions working properly and our hydration levels up. Even if you do not drink gallons of the wet stuff, you are probably still taking some in. This is either through other drinks such as tea, coffee and juice or through the foods you eat such as fruits and vegetables. Water is something that every body needs to stay living healthily.

Limiting sugar and salt is another way in which you can create a much healthier diet. Sugar gives energy and that is it, it is more for taste rather than nutritional benefits. Almost every kind of food contains some form of sugar whether it is natural or added. Many high calorie foods contain spoonful after spoonful of added sugar, so the less sweet foods eaten the better. For salt it is best to keep your daily dose less than six grams. This is the recommended allowance for an adult and is lower for a child. There are food products that are overloaded with too much salt and many have been found to include more than the recommended six grams. Try to consume less pre-prepared and fast food and create meals from scratch.

So if you are thinking about changing your daily diet, give these tips a try and see if it works for your health.
