subject: Sharm El Sheikh: A Guide To The Sun, Sites...and Sand! [print this page]

Thats the thing about summer holidays: many of us tend to end up in the same old country. Typically-English destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Greece all cater to our vocational needs. Sure, theres the familiarity the sun, the beaches, the sites, the food, the legions of fellow Brits but wheres the adventure in revisiting the same country, year after year? Every so often, its important to step out of the comfort zone and try something different. Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt can provide just that.

Sharm el Sheikh, or Sharm for short, is the perfect getaway. If youre planning a last-minute booking, there are often many late holiday deals to take advantage of too. As well as the hot weather (a prerequisite for Brits abroad) there is plenty to do in Sharm, both culturally and socially. Founded as a diving resort, Sharm is quickly gaining a reputation as an alternative to touristy European cities, boasting all-inclusive complexes and luxury hotels.

As a diving resort, there are lots of marine activities to get involved in. Snorkelling is popular, with an opportunity to get up close and personal with the ocean. Many people visit Egypt for the Nile, the pyramids, the monuments and the museums, but the underwater world is equally as impressive, with species that have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Alongside the multitudes of fish including such impressive creatures as whale sharks there are coral reefs and shipwrecks too. Jacques Cousteau famously discovered the remains of the SS Thistlegorm in Sharm.

The beaches are beautiful, truly unique, with transitional waters, azure skies and bright-white sands. Aside from getting a golden-brown tan, visitors here have much to choose from, such as surfing, boat trips, golf, and desert quad-biking. Be careful of getting into sticky situation with sand, however more on that shortly.

Sightseeing is an obvious must when in Sharm. Besides the local historical sites, its recommended to spend a day in Cairo, where you can experience the things that put Egypt on the map: the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, even a Nile cruise through the Valley of the Kings. As one of the worlds oldest civilisations, the legacy here is both vast and rich.

But Sharm isnt just about history. The resort is being lauded as one of the fastest-growing social getaways too. The promenade is the location for shopping, with many boutiques, cafes and eateries. It is place where east proverbially meeting west; a balance between tradition and progression. Due to the promenades proximity to the seafront, there is always fresh seafood on sale, as well as Lebanese, Italian and Chinese food, plus takeaway brands too.
