subject: Dependence On Drugs: A Difficulty To The Community [print this page]

Little that an addict is aware, that drug abuse is a concern that involves and destroys not only the individual taking drugs but also his/her friends and family too. It can't somehow be denied how drug addiction and drug abuse significantly affects the society. Abusing drugs could go out of control since it is not a matter of ones self-control. This is brought on by the chemicals in the abused drug that makes the user want more and will cause him or her to possess a stronger and stronger behavioral instinct to use the said substances. This may lead to major consequences like from as basic as desiring more prohibited drugs to being involved in crimes. As mentioned by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, they highlighted that using drugs and becoming addicted to it, is a major problem to the society. They also explained that it almost costs a total of more than half a trillion dollars yearly as an estimated health-related and crime associated cost of drug abuse. That's why getting an abuser in a drug addiction programs would be a big step to the drug user and is also a great relief to the society.

Drug abuse greatly affects the abuser's family and friends, because it is really disturbing and tragic to watch their addicted loved one to be drawn more and more to the abused substance and go out of control due to him or her self-medicating theirselves with the abused drugs. Ones employment could also be affected. As the drug abuser draws closer and closer to addiction, the more hard it is for the individual to do their work properly. Hence, both job performance and work attendance are very much affected at the same time. That's the reason why other professionals lose their license that are then unattainable to regain, which then contributes to income loss and later on may affect their family's lives as well.

Doing crimes to get and have more drugs is also something a drug abuser would never normally do. Due to their unmanageable urges for drugs, they have a tendency to do things and may lead them to do illegal dealings and may have the will to harm others to get what they have craved for. Involving in such crimes doesn't only place the abusers at risk alone but as well as their loved ones including their family and friends.

It's apparent that drug addiction is a societal issue and that these drug abusers seriously needs help to be cured of their addiction through substance abuse programs. But somehow, the society may feel that they could do less to help these addicts due to the concern that they may further cause harm to the abuser or the fear that the addict will harm them. The society may not understand why drug abusers can't easily or simply quit taking the said drugs. But in reality, it is just a simple and the right education which is the step to unlock facts on abusing drugs, not just for the addict's information but for the society too.
