subject: 5 Summer Moving Tips [print this page]

Ever longed for a smooth transition while moving? Especially during the summer? Here"s what you need.

Below are just a few things that will go a long way.

1. The first question to ask is can I do the move by myself or do I need a few more people or should I even a hire a company for that. This depends on your lifestyle, household size, budget and amount of time you have to get everything accomplished. Now if yours is a large scale move, get written quotes from at least three licensed moving companies. If you are moving to somewhere in the Hamptons there is Uncle Bob"s storage that can help you with boxes, tapes and other essentials for packing. Packing calculators can be of great help if you are moving yourself or doing a partial service move. They"ll help you estimate the amount of boxes and packing materials needed. The prices for rental truck, portable storage and freight services etc are higher during the summer but advance booking may be lower.

2. Getting a full value insurance protection is a good idea. This means that if anything is damaged or lost it will be repaired or replaced or a cash settlement will be made. This will cost just a few dollars extra but it eliminates later annoyances. But that wouldn"t cover expensive items like flat screen TV if damaged.

3. Assess how long it will take for you to pack depending on the amount of things you have, the number of people to help etc. If you have just a month to move, start packing early. Complete a free change of address and schedule utilities ahead of time at Moving.com. Get rid of things that you do not need and is just taking up space. This will reduce the amount of stuff you need to pack.

4. Plan ahead to have daycare or someone like your friend or relative to take care of your kids during moving. Same applies for your pets too if any. Moving can be very stressful for them. Don"t forget to thank your friend later.

5. Label boxes with room and contents. Mark boxes with fragile items. Take extra care while packing certain things. Be very careful with breakables. Wrap them with cloth. In the case of electronics wrap each piece with bubble wrap or foam packing material. Use original boxes to pack these. Immobilize the mobile parts. Defrost, clean and dry refrigerators/freezers days before moving. Protect furniture by padding with bubble wrap or blankets and securing firmly. Remove furniture legs if possible. Anything that you disassemble make sure you know how to put it back together, if not take a picture or something of it before disassembling, anything that will help you assemble it. There are many moving and storage companies in the Hamptons that give you full insurance and provide special handling of your valuables.

With all these, your moving will be way lot easier than it would be otherwise. All the best for your move.
