In Hinduism, most of the traditions followed for thousands of years to this date stem from examples from the lives of the two avatars of Lord Vishnu the Preserver, namely Sri Rama and Lord Krishna. Vishnu is part of the Holy Trinity of Hinduism comprising Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer who creates conditions for the uprooting of an evil order and for the cosmic cycle of eternal creation, preservation, growth, learning and finally destruction to happen so that a new cycle of new creation, new life and new consciousness can evolve.

In Ancient India, there were two incarnations of Lord Vishnu separated by many years when the Gods, unable to see the prevalence of evil and adharma, beseeched Vishnu to incarnate Himself to stamp out evil and set an example for future generations of human beings to follow.

The festival of Rakshabandhan also traces its history to these great epics of Hinduism. Once when Krishna had suffered a deep wound on the wrist, Draupadi the wife of the Pandavas tore off a piece of her sari and tied it tightly around Krishnas wrist to stem the flow of blood from the wound. The Lord was deeply moved by Draupadis sisterly love and devotion towards Him and declared that henceforth she would be Krishnas sister.

Yudhishtira, the eldest Pandava brother, despite his many good qualities was given to the bad habit of gambling. Knowing this weakness, the evil Kauravas under Shakunis advice invited Yudhishtira to their capital city of Hastinapura for a public game of chauser or dice. Shakunis scheming ensured that Yudhishtira lost everything to Duryodhana his kingdom, all the wealth of the Pandavas and even their freedom. Finally, having lost everything, he waged and lost his wife Draupadi to the evil Kauravas in the same game. When the Kauravas, true to their evil nature, attempted to humiliate Draupadi in court, she invoked the holy name of Lord Krishna and prayed for His intervention since the Pandavas were not able to protect her honour. The Lord, being omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, intervened on Draupadis behalf by indefinitely extending the length of her sari. All the shamed courtiers and elders of Dhritarashtras court looked on in awe while Lord Krishna lived up to His pledge of offering eternal protection to His sister, Draupadi.

From that day onwards, the Hindus of India, regardless of which part of the globe they might be residing in, remember their brothers and sisters during the special festival of Rakshabandhan. Brothers and sisters present each other with Rakhi Gifts on the day of the festival and sisters tie a Rakhi on their brothers wrist and pray for their well-being.
