One Direction may have not gotten together like many other groups, but that does not detract from their incredible talent and their top selling album. A result of the television sensation, The X Factor, One Direction has quickly risen to fame in the last couple of years. Their current album, Up All Night, has had extreme success commercially, on the Billboard charts, and with music fans all over the world. Starting as a huge draw in the United Kingdom, One Direction is not a popular group everywhere, including the United States. The group is also leading the way for the rise, once again, of boy bands, which have been absent from the music industry since the likes of N'Sync and Backstreet Boys. Now on tour in support of their debut album and singing songs from a yet untitled second album, One Direction tickets are selling out in venues across the world.

Becoming One Direction

The boy band did not have the most likely of formations. Rather than having gone to the same high school, or be put together by a record label, One Direction formed quite coincidently. All five members of the group - Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles - had originally auditioned for The X Factory in 2010, the show's seventh season. However, they all failed to make it through in the "Boys" category. As a suggestion from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five boys joined together to form a band in order to make it through the "Group" category. The newly formed boy band had a short time to prepare for the actual competition and so they began practicing right away without stopping.

The name One Direction was created by Styles who thought it would be easy to say and would sound good when announced. Although One Direction did extremely well in the competition, they lost out to Matt Cardle and the song that would have been released had the band won the competition, "Forever Young", was leaked on the Internet. But One Direction garnered a lot of attention because of the song and a short while after the competition, the group was signed to Simon Cowell's record label.

The signing with Syco Records began a road to fame that the boys did not think was possible after having lost the competition. Columbia Records in North America signed the boys in 2011 and from there, they knew they were on their way to becoming a successful group. Up All Night was released in 2011 and was an immediate hit with music fans, placing well on the Billboard charts. "What Makes You Beautiful", the first single from the debut album, is still one of the most played songs on the radio and most watched videos online and on music television programs. Their album has the boys collaborating with other famous singers, including Tom Fletcher, Kelly Clarkson, Ed Sheeran, RedOne, and tons more.

Ever since One Direction set out on tour, they have been selling out arenas and have continued to sell thousands more copies of their album.
