subject: Eyeglasses Are A Great Invention [print this page]

A very common ice breaker question asked at leadership camps and at a general get together is, "If you could live in any time period, what time period would you live in?" This question always reveals great insight on the people who answer it. Most men choose the medieval time period, so they can be knighted, save the princess, and become king over a great country. Others choose the time period around the discovery of America, so they could save the Indians from the now called Americans. I always chose the 21st century, because if I grew up in the past, I would be blind. I require the use of glasses; I'm basically blind without them. Living in Missiouri (more specifically St. Louis) there is an abundance of eyeglasses in St. Louis, and I can forever have sight.

People who are born with 20/20 vision can't begin to appreciate their sight because they have never lost it. Every morning I wake up to a world of blur and random colors until I put on my glasses. The invention of glasses has changed the lives of millions of people worldwide and continues to give people the gift of sight. My optometrist informed me at my first appointment that I had astigmatism in my left eye, and that my right eye had worse sight then my left eye.

Eyeglasses aren't necessarily a new invention, and I probably would have had glasses that worked just fine in any other time period, but the accuracy and precision that an optometrist can achieve today is unimaginable to an optometrist from the past. An optometrist literally knows my eyes better than I do. When I first realized I needed glasses, my optometrist informed me that my right eye has worse sight than my left eye, and that I had astigmatism.

Many people hardly take into account how their lifestyles affect the health of their eyes. There are people who exercise regularly in order to keep the body in shape, but staying active and eating a healthy diet does more than your body good, it actually keeps ones eyes healthy as well. A common myth that parents will tell their kids is that if one eats carrots, their eyesight will get better. There is no scientific evidence that shows that by only eating carrots one will have better eyesight. Experts have found that Vitamin A and iron are what actually keep eyes healthy. Both Vitamin A and iron will be consumed if one is on a proper, balanced diet.

Eyeglasses are an important invention simply because vision will likely get worse and worse with age or if one doesn't eat a proper diet. It is a common myth that carrots help ones eyesight, but this isn't true at all. A proper balanced diet is what keeps eyesight sharp and clear. More specially, a diet with sufficient Vitamin A, iron, and other substances are what actually keep eyes healthy.

What is more extraordinary about this optic technology is the fact that it is readily accessible. I live in St. Louis Missouri, and by simply doing a quick search for eye care centers in St. Louis, I was able to find nine different places all pertaining to eyeglasses care

Eyeglasses could possibly one of the most important inventions ever. The concept of getting better vision and glasses themselves are not new by any means. History shows us that many of our fore fathers and great women and men throughout our history have worn glasses, but the technology we possess today greatly out weighs the knowledge they possessed

If one isn't completely blind, technology today can help one not only have good vision, but clear 20/20 vision if desired. Like stated before, I live in St. Louis and there are eyeglasses in St. Louis in what seems to be around every corner.
