subject: Who Qualifies For Drug Rehabilitation Requirement [print this page]

Many drug dependence cases are usually left untreated until a violation of the law occurred that resulted from use of prohibited alcohol and drugs. In the US, this is called a drug rehabilitation requirement. When a person is found to have in his possession illicit drugs, therapy may be suggested by the court as part of the punishment. Driving under the influence of alcohol is regarded as the leading causes of getting into drug rehabilitation requirement.

The court may issue a community order or a suspended sentence order to a person who has been caught with possession of prohibited drugs or who has been driving under the influence of alcohol. The earlier orders mentioned would identify the length of therapy as stated in the courtroom order. Usually, those who've been given a community order are to undergo therapy up to 3 years while those under suspended sentence order have lower therapy span of up to 2 yrs. Once the court has issued these orders, the individual is left without a choice or face the punishment of the law. Although unwilling, these individuals will sign an agreement and will be under the supervision of an officer in the Probation Service. This person will explain the facts of the treatment process and will be there during regular monitoring of the individuals drug or alcohol blood content.

Together with a responsible officer in charge on probation is another point person involve in the course of treatment. Drug rehabilitation programs have staff that assists individuals who are under a court order for treatment. These 2 personnel will help the addict in reaching the goal of a drug-free and productive life. This is a package of support and care that would allow the drug abuser to move on with life and be a law offender no more. However, some drug users after probation are still under methadone medication depending on the severity and need.

Although drug rehabilitation requirement is not a voluntary act but many drug and alcohol abusers have benefited from this type of solution by the judicial system. Considering therapy for many drug users is difficult and painful. The requirement imposed by the law pushes the limits of an abuser in going to drug rehabilitation programs. This is a better option than going to prison because it does not confine an individual in an enclosed cell with no opportunities. Teens and young adults are often given this requirement to alter their life's course and direct them to a better way of living.
