subject: Kitchen Tiles: Durable Decor For Your Home [print this page]

When you are in the process of refurbishing your kitchen, there are a lot of important decisions to be made, not least of which is what type of wall and floor covering you are going to have. The cost of redecorating any room can be phenomenal and the kitchen perhaps most of all. So you will want any decision you make to stand the test of time, as well as withstanding the rigours put on any fittings by the intensive nature of the environment. Kitchen tiles are central to the functionality of your kitchen and need to be practical, as well as easy to keep clean and attractive. Luckily, there is a staggering array of kitchen tiles available from conventional DIY stores to online shops. Indeed, next to picking out wallpaper and paint, finding the ideal kitchen tiles is one of those painstaking operations that can take many, many hours. This is especially the case if you decide to look online, as internet based shops can deliver a much wider range of tiles, and at prices that make them particularly attractive.

However, it is not only design and colour that you need to think about. Of similar importance is the size and texture of the tiles you are considering. One of the latest vogues is for mosaic coverings. These tiny tiles usually come in sheets of roughly 25cm squared and are attached in the conventional way, to quickly create the effect of a detailed intricacy. On the opposite side, larger ceramic tiles are very much in fashion and create the illusion of a bigger space even in smaller rooms. Added to which, larger tiles can often be a lot easier to work with if you are planning on installing them as part of a DIY job.

Another point to consider is the durability of your tiles. If you are intending to use them as a floor covering, they obviously need to be suited for this and have the type of finish which ensures they will stay in tip top condition no matter how many pairs of feet go marching over them. As with wall coverings, preparation is central and is even more important as a failure to create a flat surface will lead to cracks in your tiles as the constant pressure over an uneven surface breaks them down. There are, however, a number of excellent adhesive products on the market and these are invaluable in helping to easily create a perfect foundation to receive your tiles.
