subject: Clerical Government Jobs In India [print this page]

If you are looking for a clerical job in the Government of India, you should browse the website of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The SSC Recruitment Board is the single agency that controls these recruitments of technical data entry operators, graduate level clerks and stenographers.

The Indian Staff Selection Commission (SSC)

The SSC controls the recruitment to Group B (non-gazetted posts both technical and non-technical) and Group C (non-technical) positions. They recruit candidates for the various government departments, and their subordinate offices, except for the Railways and Industrial establishments that have their own recruitment boards.

The SSC functions through a network of 9 nationwide Regional offices (at Bangalore, Guwahati, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai and Allahabad) and sub-regional offices (at Chandigarh and Raipur. Depending on which part of India you reside in, you could approach the SSC closest to you, for further details.

On an annual basis, they post a list of the nationwide positions available, along with the essential and desirable qualifications for each position. In case you do not meet all the desirable qualifications for a particular position, approach the officer at the local SSC office. He/she is authorized to examine your application and make a decision of whether to relax one or two of the criteria depending on the rest of your qualifications and extenuating circumstances.

Banking Clerical Jobs

If you are interested in a bank job, particularly at the clerical level, you could browse the net for Bank Jobs in India. You will find information on job opportunities for fresh graduates in banks like Citibank, ICIC, ING Vysya, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra and many other banks that are operating all over India. Clerical jobs include functions like customer service, account opening, demat account handling, opening of recurring deposit accounts, etc. There are predetermined qualifications required for these positions and you will also probably have to a prescribed exam before you will be appointed.

Clerical Jobs as a Stepping Stone

Clerical jobs are advantageous as they require a comparatively lower level of qualifications. It is therefore easier to enter an organization at this level, especially if you are a recent graduate. Once you get a clerical job you are gaining valuable work experience and you are earning. It is then easier to become aware of more senior positions that come up periodically. As a first preference, all organizations first look at internal promotion opportunities to fill vacancies, rather than fresh recruitment. You can then prepare for any qualifying exams necessary and apply for a promotion.
