There are many types of tissues, organ and muscles that make up the whole of the body, each one serving a specific purpose that is designed to help maintain healthy functions. What gives all of that soft matter some structure and support are the bones that construct the human skeleton. The bone marrow concentration nestled inside this frame produces large quantities of stem cells that are crucial components to the battle against disease and infections.

The flexible tissue found in the middle of many of the larger bones is known as marrow. It is spongy in texture and is mainly concentrated in the sternum, skull, pelvis, femur and humerus. The main job of this substance is to produce new blood cells to replace the damaged ones, as well as lymphocytes that are an important part of the immune system. The blood vessels that permeate the matter is the transportation system for fresh oxygen and the newly formed articles.

This soft matter in the center of the bones comes in two different varieties, red and yellow. They rely on each other for survival and function yet have unique jobs to perform. Both parts doing their bit correctly is how the boy is able to continue to operate at top capacity.

The longer bones of the arms and legs are the ones that yield the most yellow marrow in their centers. This substance contains a fairly large amount of fat because it's primary function is that of provider. It is a form of life support as it produces the nutrients that feed the skeleton and maintain proper conditions for the red type to perform well.

What the red version of this matter does is create new cells that the body will use to replace those that have become weak or damaged. It surrounds the yellow and though it starts out in more abundance, as the years pass, it will shrink while its counterpart will become more massive. At all times, the flat bones of the sternum and pelvis contain the highest concentrations of this type.

Stem cells are found within this tissue growing in the center of the bones. They have a differentiated existence which means they are able to change themselves and become something more specialized. For instance, depending on what the body needs, they may become lymphocytes, platelets or even red or white blood cells.

Medical science has recently begun to discover just how useful immature stem cells can be. They may be harvested and utilized as treatment against many different diseases and conditions. Their morphing nature and ability to become any necessary component, makes them invaluable to both the body and to research.

It is through this continuous cycle of replacement that the body gains the ability to stave off viruses, bacterias and pathogens. A system that is working properly is always generating new cells to replace the old. When attacked by conditions such as various cancers, Hodgkin Disease and Leukemia, the matter may become unhealthy. If chemotherapy fails, a transplant may be required.

This procedure is risky because a donor who not only matches the recipient genetically, but has a high enough bone marrow concentration, must be found. For this reason, family members are generally preferred. Though not known as a pleasant experience for either participant, a successful process may be able to re-establish healthy stem cell production.
