This is especially true of the NFL teams that have made drastic changes to their coaching staff. These changes were made to help sell NFL tickets, but to also give their teams the opportunity to do better this season and hopefully make the playoffs. Seven NFL coaches will be head coaches for the first time on their respective teams. Here is a look at the first-year NFL head coaches going into the 2012 season.
Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis Colts:
Coach Chuck Pagano left the Baltimore Ravens as their Defensive Coordinator to lead a team that is in virtual shambles. However, they were able to have the No.1 draft pick and used it wisely to select the best quarterback out of college, Andrew Luck. Coming from a defensive background and joining a team that has struggled defensively for some time, that may be the area Pagano will focus on. Leaving the offense to offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, Pagano may actually have some decent luck getting this squad up to par this season.
Dennis Allen, Oakland Raiders:
Having given Hue Jackson only one year to be the head coach of the Raiders, it comes as a bit of a shock that Allen was selected to come in this season. Allen also has a lot of pressure on him and not much help from either the defense or the offense. However, they do have a possible star in quarterback Carson Palmer and a team that is known to be aggressive each and every season.
Mike Mularkey, Jacksonville Jaguars:
Mularkey brings offensive intelligence and power to the Jaguars. The last time he was head coach was for the Buffalo Bills in 2004, and that also happened to be the last winning season for that team. That says a lot about his ability to lead teams. As long as he can keep their defense strong and build on the offense, the Jaguars may be in a good position this season.
Romeo Crennel, Kansas City Chiefs:
He made a big impression in the three games he coached last season. Crennel led the Chiefs to a victory over the Packers with only six days to prepare. He did not have much luck with the Browns, but few coaches do, but he is poised to be one of the best new coaches this season.
Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins:
Philbin had success with the Packers, able to keep them in the top ten offensive lines in the league. He has also worked with famed quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers and knows how to mold quarterbacks into winners - something the Dolphins hope he can do with Tannehill.
Jeff Fisher, St. Louis Rams:
Luckily for Fisher, the Rams have been slowly building up their team the last few years. Like the 49ers who are now taking advantage of that, the Rams should fare well this season.
Greg Schiano, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
With the additions of Carl Nicks and Vincent Jackson, the Bucs have a decent offense. Schiano is also rebuilding the defense, which could lead to an increase in wins.
