Self- esteem can be considered as the overall opinion about ourselves. It can be determined as the awareness on your abilities and limitations. It is a sort of self assessment that begins at an early age. However, some tend to overcome the difficulty of having low self-esteem at a tender age while it develops in other people with age.

A person with a healthy self-esteem shall feel positive about themselves and will receive the respect of others. At the same time, a person with low self-esteem will doubt on the decisions taken by them and may not think themselves to be worthy enough to express their opinions and ideas in front of other people. A healthy self-esteem can be built at a tender age. Some of the factors that affect self-esteem may be listed as follows.

Your thoughts and perceptions:

A person develops their self-esteem from the society that they live in. However, the response of the teachers, friends and parents towards a person can determine the self-esteem in them. For example, a child can have a healthy self-esteem if he is always being welcomed with positive responses from the people around him. He can boost his level of self-esteem if he is being appreciated for the work he has done. A negative or downgraded response by the people around him can develop a low self-esteem.

Controlling your thoughts:

Your thoughts can develop your self-esteem. However, you can tend to grow a low self-esteem in you if you think of only the flaws or the defects that are prevalent in you. However, you can find out ways to correct it or improve the mistakes that you have done from the experiences of the past. The negative thoughts must never dominate your capabilities and talents. You should always try to showcase your positive aspects rather than focusing on the negative traits in you.

Illness, injury or disability:

Conditions, like certain illnesses, can bring about a low self-esteem in you. Moreover, the factors like disability or and injury can also grant you a feeling of loss that can lead to a decrease in your self-esteem. The people undergoing such changes in their lives always concentrate on their limitations and tend to think that they are of little importance in this world. Such people should receive greater attention and care from those around them and should be constantly provided with encouragement.

Discouragement and depression:

Discouragement is one of the main reasons that can turn to low self-esteem in a person. However, a child can be easily affected by discouragement from teachers, parents and friends. This may lead to a sense of disappointment inside them that may grow and turn to one of their greatest weaknesses. One of the common results of disappointments and low self-esteem is depression. Depression can lead to disturbances in a persons emotional stability.

Thus, one should try and develop a feeling of security and confidence over his capabilities in order to overcome the peer pressure of low self-esteem.
