subject: Moving Your Used Safe [print this page]

For the lifetime of your used safe, there will likely come a time when it needs to be removed or relocated. This doesnt need to be a daunting task if you know what precautions to take. The locksmith or movers you hire will likely take care of all the physical aspects of the AMSEC safes removal. The locksmith will also remove bolts and screws that keep the safe intact, as well as the physical relocation and, if required, its disposal. Before the locksmith arrives, however, there are several things the property owner should keep in mind.

Be sure to have all the information on your safe at hand before calling the locksmith. Sometimes the brand name and model of a safe will be sufficient information for a locksmith to move it. However, you might also want to supply information on weight and dimension. Also, you may need to tell the locksmith whether the safe is open or closed, and if you have the key or combination to the safe.

You should also inform the locksmith of both the safes current location and where it will be moved. Make sure the location where it will be moved is constitutionally strong enough to handle the weight of the safe; you may need to contact a structural engineer to determine this.

Be prepared to tell the locksmith what floor your safe sits on, as well as whether there are a stairs or an elevator to help navigate, and whether either of these methods can handle the weight of a safe. Also consider whether the safe will fit through all the doorways in your building.

Consider the building that contains the safe. The locksmith will want to know if there are any restrictions or blocked access, both within the building and with parking; the locksmith will likely bring a truck at will be able to hold your safe and will need to park it on the street. If there is a parking garage, make sure to be aware of any height restrictions and let the locksmith know. If there are specific times in which the locksmith cannot park the truck, be sure the locksmith is aware of this, too.

If the safe is removed to be disposed of, make the locksmith aware of whether or not it contains asbestos. The locksmith will still be able to remove and dispose of it, yet he may have to take extra safety precautions in its removal and disposal, which may require additional costs. The locksmith will also need to take it to a special facility to get the asbestos removed.

Before the locksmith comes, remove any furniture or obstructions that might be in the way. Be sure to remove the safe of its contents prior to removal to decrease its overall weight.

Moving a safe, which can weigh as much as two thousand pounds, can be extremely dangerous to do on your own, so make sure to hire a locksmith or certified moving professional to do so. For an especially small safe, its possible for yourself and two other fit, healthy people to assist you, but extreme caution is advised. Using a locksmith and following all the precautionary measures above will make the removal process stress-free.
