subject: Recovering DB2 Database Post "SQL0980C A disk error occurred..." Error by:Mark Willium [print this page]

Are you receiving an error message while taking a DB2 database backup? Or an error message pops up while restoring the database backup? If the answer for any of the above questions is 'yes', then there are possibilities of DB2 database corruption. Damage in DB2 database can occur due to both logical (improper system shutdown, application malfunction, virus attack, concurrent execution, and operating system malfunction) and physical (heat, water, accidental drop down, and natural disasters) reasons. While database recovery from a physically damaged hard drive can only be performed by a reputed data recovery organization, the logically damaged DB2 database can be repaired using a third-party DB2 Repair software.

For deep explanation of the above scenario, take a real-time situation where you want to create a backup of your DB2 database. You run the backup command, and the backup process starts. However, when the database backup process is in progress, you encounter the below error message:

"SQL0980C A disk error occurred. Subsequent SQL statements cannot be processed."

After the above error message appears, the DB2 database backup process halts. In addition, the database becomes unmountable after the above error message appears. The records saved in the database also become inaccessible. On viewing the db2diag.log file, you see the below error message:

"MESSAGE : ADM6023I The table space "SYSTOOLSTMP" (ID "28") is in state

0x"0". The table space cannot be accessed. Refer to the documentation for SQLCODE -290. "

Cause:

The above error message appears when the database gets logically damaged.

Resolution:

To resolve DB2 database corruption and to get past the above error message, you will need to take underneath actions:

Use another backup file (standby database) and perform complete restoration.

However, the standby database does not contains all those changes that you made recently. So, if you need to access the updated database with all the recent changes, then you will need to repair the database using an effective DB2 Recovery utility. Such DB2 Database Repair tools use effective recovery techniques to repair any logically damaged DB2 database.

DB2 Recovery is a pioneer in recovering databases corrupted due to logical crash. Compatible with IBM DB2 (UDB) v8, the read-only DB2 Recovery software is competent enough to recover almost all database objects. The user-friendly tool is designed for Windows 2003, XP, and 2000 operating systems.
