subject: What A Thief Might Target [print this page]

Nobody likes being burgled at any time, but when an opportunist thief breaks into your home then they are only likely to pick up things they can carry easily. This article looks at which possessions you really should make sure come under your home insurance cover.

Cameras

Typically thieves will target possessions that are lightweight and easy to carry, particularly if they are taking advantage of an open window or unlocked door. While the more expensive cameras are more attractive to them in terms of being sellable for a higher amount, they do tend to be bulkier and therefore it shouldn't be a total surprise if a thief was to leave your digital SLR in favour of a pocket digital camera for the simple reason that it can simply fit in your pocket.

iPhones

IPhones are actually rather expensive pieces of kit and if you're unfortunate enough to lose your own one in a burglary then getting then you could face a heavy bill if you're not insured as you have to pay out the remaining months of your contract or buy a new one straight off. Of course, because they are also extremely easy to break it is often worthwhile knowing where you can go to have them repaired as this can save you a lot of money and anguish.

Laptops

Laptops are probably one of the most popular things a thief might steal from you, as they are difficult to trace and can provide a decent return in a pawn shop or cash and carry. However, losing the laptop may not be the end of your worries, as if you work from home then you'll have to have all your files backed up otherwise you'll be losing a big chunk of your work. Even if the laptop you have stolen is only used for entertainment, there's a reasonable chance that at one point it will have been used for online banking, and at this point your trouble could be a whole lot worse if it falls into the wrong hands. The reason for this is that some computer experts could take the hard drive and all your personal information on it, potentially stealing your identity as well as clearing out your bank accounts.

As you can see there are plenty of things that a thief may target, so just make sure that you're properly insured and keep your home securely locked.
