subject: Is There Really A Gas Crisis [print this page]

It seems like every day you hear that we are running out of gas in fifty, twenty, or ten years. Experts speak of peak oil, open warfare for oil, and how we must invest in alternatives now. All this gloom and doom can leave the average person wondering who to trust and if it really is all going to run out in a few decades. Should you be worried? Is it time to install a solar panel? Will the world devolve into some sort of Mel Gibson Apocalypse film? The truth is that there is only a finite amount of oil on the planet, and it will eventually run out, but before you start fashioning armor from the stuff in your garage, the situation is not all that dire. Read on to learn how the problem is not as bad as it is often made out to be.

The truth is that oil prices will continue to rise as it becomes more scarce. But they will likely rise linearly rather than exponentially. This means we will have plenty of time to wean ourselves off of this fuel source and find another before it runs out. Of course this means that we should invest in alternative sources of energy in the mean time, there is no reason not to get ahead of the game while we can..

Sure, we have already harvested all the oil that was just laying around on the ground or just underneath it. But there is still oil deep in the earth, locked away in shale deposits, and laying in wait under the ocean floor. Sure it is more expensive to get to this oil that it has been in the past, and this is one reason that the price continues to rise. But as it becomes more scarce, these extended efforts will become increasingly more cost effective, even as the technology becomes cheaper. For example, there exists massive shale oil deposits in North Dakota. Shale oil is oil that is locked up in a flaky rock, it just needs extra processing in order to extract it. In fact, the area is in a boom, where they are having trouble finding secretaries and fast food workers as everyone is quitting to work in the shale fields. And to the North there are the Alberta oil sands in Canada. This deposit is so vast there is talk of building a pipeline down to Texas or Louisiana for refining. And do not forget about the Alaskan reserves as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is climate change. Whether you believe that it is caused by human activity or not, the planet is warming and as previously frozen sections are uncovered, there are likely to be new oil sources uncovered that were previously inaccessible under ice. These sources may even be very easy to reach once the ice melts. There is no reason not to make the best of a bad situation. So do not worry about running out of oil for your MQ generator or Kohler generator any time soon.
